Transmission Filter Change Question

Hey All,

I was recently having troubles with my 1991 Acura Legend, to which the car sounded as if the tranny was slipping. It was suggested that I change the internal strainer (transmission filter)...My question is this...If I recently changed my transmission fluid and I want to change the transmission filter, do I need to change the transmission fluid again?...If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated...Thanks...Peace

Yes

Since you won't get all of the fluid out, I would add new genuine Honda fluid just to be safe. That way a higher percentage will be fresh fluid.

After you replace the filter perform a flush, use the search and that will help you out; there have many postings on this procedure and topics and various ways to flush our trannys as well.

Buy a filter and 5 quarts of Honda ATF fluid. ALWAYS throw away the fluid that you drain from a car. NEVER reuse it. When you replace the strainer, I am pretty sure there is an O-ring you will need too. You'll see much more ATF drain from the car than a normal ATF change. Then add back 3 1/3 quarts when you are done. Start checking and keep adding until you get up to the mark. Start the car and let it run 10 to 15 seconds, HOLDING THE BRAKES and not moving, shift to neutral and then to drive. then to neutral, then to reverse then to park and turn it off. The order isn't critical. Then wait 3 or 4 minutes and check it again. The oil level may drop, if so, fill it to the mark again and then drive it to warm up the fluid. Then check it again while it is warm. Take your time on the transmission pan so you don't have any leaks. My year has two different gaskets depending upon the trans serial number. Be sure you have that just in case when you buy the parts. You'll need a flashlight to see it on the side of the trans with the hood open.
