Transmission grinding noise ...

This car is starting to get old...

The transmission starts whining at me at about 40mph. Tranny shop says the
bearings are going out or something similar.

What have others done with this situation ? Is swapping out transmissions the better
route or rebuilding one ? Is it worth while to do this ?

Thanks.

If it's an auto, have you cleaned/replaced the screen and changed the tranny fluid?

Looking at engine and tranny, its possibly the differential too. Any way to diagnose

Nobody has done their differential ?
Transmission does fine - shifts, downshifts, etc. Only when I get on power
do I hear a grind noise. When I get off power, the noise stops - kindof like a differential
when there isn't the right amount of preload on the gears.

Have you changed or checked the differential oil?

Checking/changing the differential oil is this weekend's task.
