Hey, I changed my radiator with a new one. The installation went well, used Honda coolant, bled the system and took it for a 5 minute drive at normal operating temperature. Pulled into the garage and touched the top of the rad and the upper hose and both were hot, however, the lower hose was still cool. Is the rad blocked or something? something I should know about new rads? thanks.
EDIT: I did some research and many said that the thermostat is stuck closed. I haven't had ANY problem with overheating even with a leaky rad. Also, since the hot coolant is coming from the upper hose into the rad and then leaving it, it should be cool, right? maybe I need to drive it around a little longer, say half an hour...?

I have a 1991 Legend L and the seal on the water pump went out so now the pump leaks. I had a BHG and replaced it as well as the timing belt and water pump but my lower radiator hose broke causing it to overheat a little and blow the seal on the pump. I need to know how difficult it is to change the water pump. i took it to the shop and they want $488 to change it. I have the reapir manual which explains hoe to do it, i just want to know how difficult it is to do because IM NOT paying $500 to get it done! Any suggestions?

If you know nothin about setting timing I wouldnt mess with it, If u put the timing back on wrong youll be needing a new engine which is waaay more than $500

Car heats up any time i stop.
My legend gets hot when stopped at a light or in traffic, but cools off back to normal when im driving. I realize that my fans don't run while the car is on, but as soon as I turn off the car they kick in. Im thinking its the fan relay or the temp sensor. but dont know where to find either, any help would be appreciated

First try swapping the relays to eliminate them. The cooling system relays are located in the underhood relay box. Its next to the top of the radiator on the driver side. For troubleshooting you can swap the: 1. Radiator fan main relay with the windshield wiper intermittant relay 2. Radiator FAN Relay with the Horn Relay. 3. Condensor fan relay with the Horn relay. Try #1, if it doesn't help then try #2. If that doesn't help swap them back and try #3. Remember that it can sometimes take 20 minutes for it to get hot enough for the cooling fan to activate.

a customer of mine has a legend with a coolant leak. it started as a shg at about 140k, i think due to driving with its first blown radiator. the shg wasnt fixed immediately only the radiator. driving with a shg until around 200k led to alot of damage to the cooling system as well as alot of money spent on misdiagnosis. now on a third rad, a new hg, hc, wp, hoses, seals from the heads up, couple tstats, sensors, fan control unit, it still loses coolant and of course overheats at long idling periods
doesnt burn coolant that i see. no hydrocarbons in the coolant. spark plugs considerably clean. ive inspected all hose connections, theres a damn lot on this car. no real visible leaks anywhere, but to keep it from overheating he says he has to daily check the radiator level. what else should i check?

If it is to an unknown location it has to be being consumed by the combustion process. A very clean spark plug is an indication that coolant is passing through that cylinder. It could be a cracked head or at worst a cracked cylinder. Another way to to check for this situation is let the engine sit without starting it for a couple of days. Slowly take the oil drain plug out and let a couple of ounces of oil out into a cup. If there is any coolant in there it will drain out first. If coolant is present it is probably leaking past the headgasket. Head or block could also be cracked. Remove the plugs and look at the center, white part. It should be a brownish burnt color. If it a clean white, coolant is washing it clean. Here are some pics I took. Flickr: bobmob's Photostream

looses coolant thru the bottle due to expansion from overheating. ive run it around a couple times now. seems to do well until its been warmed up and it idles for about a half hour. plugs arent overly clean, just not fouled. no white smoke from exhaust or coolant<-->oil mixing. just glad my coupes runnin right with 222k

recently had a BHG on my 1995 Legend. The BHG was just starting and was pushing air out the bottle. It had not yet reached the stage where it pushed fluid out the bottle. If you are concerned it might be a BHG, put a pressure tester on the radiator and see what the pressure builds to.
I might add - mine was so new and weak that the plugs still showed good color. When the heads came off, there was little evidenece that the cyl had a bad gasket because the exhaust gasses were going into the cooling system and no moisture was coming into the cyl.

Recently dealt with my own overheating issues. Car would overheat at stoplights, drive-thru, etc. I put a new relay in the radiator fan relay and still had the problem, so I topped off the coolant and viola! No more problems.

shittttt
my car started overheating the other day so i took it to the columbia exxon off of little patuxent in maryland.
it cost $471 to replace the cooling fan relay, replace thermostat and gasket, and "fix electric" (i think there the wiring got screwed up from the car overheating) they told me that there is damage to the head gasket and i should spend another $3,000 to have it fixed by them despite their work the thermostat was still going crazy it would be all the way at C, and then spike up to H, and then linger around a bit before falling to the middle. ive had to fill the radiator with water more than twice since their work so i took it back and asked them to check for a leak or anything they tell me that they didnt miss anything, and its the damage to the head gasket they told me about before i dont drive it hard at all, i keep it under 2, 3 at most rpm. today it started to overheat again so i pulled into another gas station to check it out, i noticed water was leaking out from under the front of the car, and steam was coming out of this part of my cari threw in a gallon of water, and let it cool off a bit. can anyone relate or help me out other than this mechanic who i think is trying to run a quick one |
