18" OEM Wheels & TPMS problem
Need some help with a problem I started having after installing the 18" OEM wheels.
I had the 18" OEM RL wheels and Avon Tech M550 A/S tires installed this weekend by a local shop (not my Acura dealer). They installed the valve stems that came with the wheels and overall everything is great except the TPMS system. After about 10 minutes of driving, the TPMS error comes up on the MID and the MID reports a TPMS error when it is selected. If I select TPMS in the MID BEFORE the error, the PSI readings are variable. One time all four corners registered 58 PSI. This morning they were 30, 31, 32 & 33 before the TPMS error came up on the MID. One thing I did notice is that TPMS seems to error quicker if I jump on the expressway. I'm assuming the RL uses a transmitter in the valve stem to transmit the PSI to the MID and not the rotational algorithm used in other vehicles. Is there a procedure to pair the new stems with the TPMS system or something like that? I put the NAV in diagnostic mode but did not see any setup related to the TPMS except the auto/manual tire offset. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. OK. I answered my question. As an FYI for anyone as hard headed as me (I hope no one is, though). The sensors were never removed from my old wheels. This makes the whole TPMS issue I am having clear as vodka.
I do not think the guys that installed the new wheels and tires knew (or cared) that the old tires had TPMS sensors in them.Oh well. I learned a lot about the TPMS system in my car. ![]() |

Thanks for the heads up.
Seems like the tpms system in some ways can be a pain in the ass. I guess it is good to have if a tire has a leak but other than that it is downright useless in my opinion. I have a tp gauage that I use to get better readings than the sensors |

A year ago, I would have agreed with you about the tire pressure sensors. But in the last 7 months workers began constructing an enormous addition to a house near our lot. (Lots of debris and loose nails left around.) Twice I got in my RL and found I had lost large amounts of pressure in a tire. Eventually, over the course of several months, I had to replace two tires because they each had nails in them. Both times the tire pressure readout was instant and prevented any problems (which I might have noticed too late). Also, because I got the nails out immediately, I was able to show them to owners of the house who covered the cost of both tires.
