Car 1: Acura RL

iTrader: (0)
Why doesn't the RL sell like it should?

What's wrong with the RL? Sure, it may not be the most beautiful car, but it's got an excellent AWD system, lots of sophisticated equipment, good handling, and is priced fairly.Last month, Acura sold a mere 395 RL's. Interesting to note is how well every other car does in the Acura lineup, minus the RL. If Acura can't sell a mid-level car, they definitely cannot sell a full size car.Thoughts? Opinions?

it looks like a copy, has no individual style, and for a midrange Japaneses name like acura...isn't all that. When people buy the REALLY nice cars like the RL, they buy it half for the name Mercedes or Audi and exc.

Well, i think it has more to do with the image.
Many people still drive and purchase by image only, MB E class sure isn't selling because its better than the RL, but because of many factors including buyers knowledge of MB name brand.
Acura need to revolutionize thier brand by producing a unique looking vehicle, a number of engines and trims, and more factory options (not dealers, leave that for Honda).
Acura falls short where it matters, and i think the first step is to walk away from Honda. Stop designing Acura's like Honda's. The new Accord overtook the Rl's size and all Acura's technology. Even engine size, the new accord has a 3.5L V6 268Hp.
I'm sure this matter was discussed before, but there are so many things Acura could perform to go back to the top.
If Acura is having a hard time selling the RL at 55K, i don't want to know how the Legend will do with over 60k, considering the Legend has the advantage of more tech gizmos.
Acura needs to distinguish the brand from Honda, now the two brands are very close, and its hurting Acura.

I like the '05-'08 RL a lot.
'09, nawttt sah much.
I think it really is a matter of name brand recognition... Sure, it's quite an amazing luxury sedan, but someone shopping for a luxury sedan would way rather be seen in a Mercedes.

Once you get to the 50k+ range your looking for a status symbol. Not JUST a luxury sedan. Thats my big reason for not liking th RL. If I had that much money available I would rather spend it on a BMW, Merc or hell even a Caddy. For a flagship vehicle its not big enough (think S-calss or 7 series), not powerul enough (V6 vs V8) and not unique enough (NO WAY should it ever even RESEMBLE an accord). It just doesnt stand out in the crowd of blah blah sedans these days and thats a problem for any manufacturer. Brand recognition is everything these days regrettably.

Having said that, it is a beautiful car. It rides awesome. Tons of techno gadgetry.

Acura needs to produce a v8 model luxury sedan...They should have been done that..to compete with the rest of the japanese luxury brands (Infinity,Lexus)....I wonder why Mazda dont have a luxury sub division?

FYI, a flagship car is not always the biggest, fastest, or the most expensive offering by an auto manufacturer.

Point being the S -Class is the MB flagship sedan while it has been edged out in price by the CL.

The M45 replaced the Q45 as Infiniti's flagship while it is not the most expensive, or the biggest, thing sitting on the lot.

The M45 didn't replace the Q45, it filled the gap between the G and Q.
Infiniti is working on thier new Q.
Expect one within 3 years.
The Q is still thier flagship, not the M

Like many ppl already said...I think its a status thing...If you see a brand new RL next to a BMW 750...who would you guess is the baller....sure the RL are a very nice car and all...But when you're in the luxury class..You gotta step your game up to compete with the new GS....with the new benz...the A8...if you dont..people wont buy..that simple...

Until the Q is on the lot, their commensurate Flagship is the M.

Their Flagship SUV is the QX56.
