So I just recently had a CompuStar 2WSS-AS alarm installed in my '94 legend. A friend of mine installed it, figured he was capable since he installs them at a shop. But last night when I went to unlock my car with the CompuStar remote it set my stock alarm off. What I'm wondering is why is the stock alarm still in my car and plugged in? Wouldn't the new brain take over the keyless entry? This also makes me wonder if the two different alarms are interfering with each other because sometimes when I go to unlock my car with the new remote it doesn't pick up on it and I have to keep pressing the button.
Would anyone know what steps I should take to fix this problem? I could go spend another $100 at a certified CompuStar dealer to have them figure out what it is, but I would rather fix it myself. I have some experience with electrical components since my Father is an electrical engineer (so I could also ask him questions about wiring. I would be having him fix it, but he happens to be in iraq fixing power there). Any helpful input would be greatly appreciated. and yes, I know my friend is an idiot and can't do it right, so feedback stating just that, is pointless The idiot wouldn't even return my calls last night.

My first answer is, I put in a better alarm because Legend theft is a bit high in the northwest, plus I wanted remote start. Second, yes I can still unlock the doors with my oem keyless entry.

sounds like your friend did not disable your factory alarm, and that is why you are having issues. i cant really assist you anymore because alarms are probably the toughest install you can do....and if not done properly can have really bad effects on your car. my best advice would be to take the car to the most experience shop in your area and pay them to fix it. sometimes we make mistakes, and sometimes we make bigger ones.... |

on a side note: Installing alarms is only an understanding of the wiring and being able to read the wiring diagram properly. Being able to wire something up can be easy if you know how to follow instructions (unless there is an engineering flaw). If I had detailed instructions for installing my alarm, I would have done it myself.

Do not unplug any connector from the stock security systems ECU. Too many things run through it like the stock ignition kill. A better way to disable the stock alarm is to trick it into thinking the hood is open. Simply open the hood, disconnect the 2 wire connector near the hood latch, and short the connector leading back to the car. This will allow the stock security systems ECU to see a completed ground coming from the hood sensor and not allow the stock alarm to be armed.
If you don't want to to all of that, you can simply not arm the stock alarm and use the after market alarm. To not arm the stock alarm, simply do not lock the doors manually. If you always use the door lock/unlock feature on the after market alarm the stock alarm will not arm. This means you can't manually lock the doors with either the tab or pushing on the lock cylinder directly. You always have to use the remote. Also, a good reason why anyone would want to think about using something other than the stock alarm for security is that all the Legends alarms are wired the same. The Legend service manual diagrams has the wiring schematics and shows exactly where the ignition kill relay is. It is kind of easy to silence the alarm and bypass the starter kill relay. After than anyone can drive your car away in peace. |
