laptop in dash??
i want to mount my laptop somehow in my car so i can have audio cables going into the system, and then if i get a chip at any point i would be able to control it. does anyone have any ideas of how to mount and where? i was thinking some sort of attachment in the glovebox

greekpower, i think i might have an idea of about what your talking about, its basically what ive been think about...an attachment in the glovebox that slides out and you set the laptop on with cables for power/sound running down it?
and el mallardo, yes it will, i can just mount a camera on the dash and record with a remote!! haha sorry i am going to film school soon so it would be a good idea, like a lil editing studio in my legend!! |

I checked for West Marine stores in your area; there are two in Austin. One on Research Blvd. and one on N. FM 620. They carry a product called a universal Ram Mount, available in a swing-out configuration that will hold up to 60 lbs. In the pic below, it's most like the center one marked "Large."
![]() There is an add-on product available called a Tough Tray Laptop mount, that should bolt directly to the swing out arm. You'd be looking at about $65 for the swing-out mount and $40 for the laptop tray. The good thing is that even if one of these locations doesn't have the product on hand, they damn well better offer to get it in for you from the warehouse on the next week's replenishment truck without any shipping charge, or by store transfer from near by. If you look into it and they don't try exhaustively to get them for you (they may just have them on hand) tell them you know an Inventory Manager in District 36, and ask "what ever happened to Showtime?" Its a customer service thing. They should hop-to. If it weirds you out that it's a boating store, there's a shop here in town (Extreme Car Audio) that regularly stops in to get parts for custom "Pimp my ride" type stuff for pro athletes and actors. |

duck, i agree, but disagree. i like the idea of having it, just like i like the idea of ps2/xbox in the car. but if you do it, make is so that the driver is incapable of doing anything with it while driving. if he was to put it in there for music while he drove and integrated it into a little hand-held control that could be mounted on the steering wheel, thats fine. and when he is parked somewhere, eating lunch or whatnot, have it so that he has constant power on the laptop; or even just a charging port of the lappy, that would be ideal.
i like the idea, but i agree that drivers need no new distractions. |

dont get me wrong its not like i would be typing away while im driving, it would mostly be for show, and to put on the media player, i have like 900songs and dont feel like having a shit load of cds. all i would do is put on the media player, then put on the visualizations and let it play as i drove.

I already do this in my work van when going out of town...those long drives suck!! But as far as the music goes with the laptop along...I set mine up for me to close the lid...and then I dont have to watch a thing....as for movies included on the lappy...I do those only at a complete standstill...IE..My hotel room. I want to make a full carputer I think...add some screens and stuff...but mostly for my daughter more than anything else...a recent drive to cali had her complaining a little about her being bored (despite the fact she had with her...MP3 player, Nintendo advanced W/E thingy, toys, games and whatever else I could cram into her "in car" bag...she has 2 seperate bags...one that goes in the trunk and the "in car" to try and keep her occupied....its the world these days that everything has to be NOW..and electronic. I aint looking forward to the entire cost of building everything I want or need for this carputer deal...and I want it to still play from the radio...at least every now and then. I may have 25 gig of music...but the radio mix it up every now and then is cool too.

I guess they don't make portable music players capable of holding that much MP3 data?
korrupt1, I guess you're a better parent than mine were to me: On long trips, were lucky if we got to listen to the radio...when I got my first walkman, I had to share it with my PITA little sister. ![]()

![]() yea...Im a real hard dad huh? every christmas is gettig worse...I was just informed while we were moving stuff into the new house that her radio/cd player is more than 5 years old...so therefore must need replaced. WHAT?? But I know me...she'll get a shelf system or something for her new room. I tend to spoil her a little because of the whole divorce thing between her mom and I...and the kid never skipped a beat...stayed in school and kept solid straight A's and is on more lists than I can name right now. Like presidents list, deans list...I think 3 others too...honor roll....how can I really say no to that? Sorry for the thread hi-jack there a little Austin.... Incindentally...what ya got for a laptop you be using?
