Got a couple hours to build today.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() All the sides are attached to the rear. All I have to do is router the holes for the ports, attach the center piece and attach the top and that's it. I would be done today, but I have to go to a viewing for my bosses son. I found out he passed away new years eve. I'm dedicating this build to him. Maybe when I get back. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Please excuse the burn marks around the woofer hole... MY jasper 200 decided to be a pos and broke and I my jigsaw bit is ready to bite the dust, figuratively. Also, that last pic, dunno what happened. I have no viewfinder on my camera - broken - so I couldn't tell... |

So explain it to us that don't have a PhD in MDF
![]() What is the purpose of having the separate smaller chamber on the right? Also, why do the ports extend so far? Is that for tuning?

That wood actually isn't MDF. It's Birch Ply. It's 2/3 the weight of MDF and probably about 2/3 times stronger than MDF. It costs twice as much though and it easily splinters.
A normal ported box has one chamber and one to infinity ports. The "port area" of the port determines the length of the port. Whenever you change the number of ports, the port length increases (hence the long ports). EX: A 3 cubic foot box (mine here) with one 3" port (what I'm using) would require a port length of 4.85 inches to achieve a tuning frequency of 30 hz (what I'm using). Adding a second port increases the port length to 11.89". As for the second chamber, in an Aperodic Bi-Chamber, or more properly a Dual Chamber Bass-Reflex, enclosure, the volume of the box is split into a 2:1 ratio where the larger chamber holds the woofer. Primary tuning is achieved through the first chamber port. A second tuning frequency is achieved by the second chamber and connecting port. Different sources state that the second tuning frequency as a result of the smaller chamber doubles the primary tuning frequency. Other sources say it's the first frequency * 1.9. Either way, the second tuning frequency doesn't help so much in output, as it does to flatten the response curve and aid in cone control, allowing more power ![]() The theory can be taken to add a third chamber, resulting in a chamber ratio of .5:.33:.16 or 3:6,2:6,1:6 and again, adding another tuning frequency. It can be carried out indefinately with size being the only limitation. That and design and constructure complexity. Also, as to design theory, I have heard theories that at low levels of excursion, the ABC enclosure's third port and second chamber acts to lengthen the main tuning frequency allowing for extended low frequency response. At high excursion levels, it changes to functioning like a higher tuned box, for more spl... Kind of like vTec for speaker boxes. ![]() |
