speakers......
Ok here is my delema, My bose speakers sound like crap, and i want to upgrade. I know about the 2ohm impedience or whatever it is. I've asked if just putting in 4 ohm speakers will hurt anything. I really want to know if the speakers will be hurt. one guy said they wouldn't. but i wouldn't ming other people also saying it woudn't do anything to the speakers. I will just have to turn the bose HU up more in volume. I have enough money to buy speakers but not enough to buy speakers and a HU. that is why i am mostly talking about useing aftermarket speakers with my bose HU for right now. in like 3 months or probably less i'll be able to get the HU i want. ok here the bigger question. what speakers to get. I am thinking about 150 region for front then 150 for back sets. i don't have the money for like 300 dollar fronts then a 300 dollar back. Now before i go further i know it's like asking what should i paint my car. it's all opinion. but i would love to hear your opinion. I want SQ not just frikin loud. I listen to trance, techno, dance. so i need that good sq i don't listen to rap or r&b or anything that i would want to frikin make my ear drums bleed with. here are the speakers i were look at.
Front - Alpine SPR-176A 6 1/2" R-Series Component Two-Way Speaker back- either Alpine SPR-694A 6" x 9" R-Series 2-Way Coaxial Speakers or Infinity KAPPA 693.5I 6" x 9" 3-Way Loudspeaker now i don't know anything what so ever about speakers and sound systems. but i've been looking around, and yes i used the search, but nothing really on this or these speakers. I heard the front speakers sound really good, but if any of you have any other thoughts abotu them or any other speakers you could mention that would be great. For the back speakers i heard both of those are great. but what would the difference be in SQ between the two way or the three way.? and also what is your opnion about those back speakers, and if you haev anyother speakers you would like to mention. that would be great. If you read this whole thing and think i'm a dumbass, it's probably true, so if you are one of those please just don't say anything in this thread, and move on with life. but if you did read it and think you could help or just voice your opinion, please please doo .. thanks -Grant

I was looking at the type-r's not too long ago. I heard nothing but good stuff about them. I finally decided on my polk's because of price. I ruled out the kappas almost immediately because i didn't want to amp these speakers and everywhere i read that its almost a necessity to amp them.

I recently put Alpine Type S (step down from type r) speakers in my car, they sound excellent. I got both the front and back for just under $150 shipped. I did the headunit at the same time however. Are you planning to put these in yourself? Do you want a really powerful system, or one that just sounds better than stock? If you're on a budget I think you'd be pretty happy with the alpine Type S speakers and put the extra money towards a better headunit.

bazooka has good 6.5" two way speakers. they sound just as good as the polk audio speakers. i replace all my speakers with them for less then $85. the bass coming from these speakers is amazing. sound almost like bose.

Well thanks for the posts. ummm yeah i might not go with the kappas just cause of what you said. i don't have the money right now to get an amp. The reason i say i don't havemoney is cause i don't have enough for a nice amp or something like that. I don't want to low ball something that i have to listen to everyday. Umm I'm still thinking about getting the type r's cause as 88legend said i haven't heard anything but positive remarks. I don't just want a crazy powerful system, and i don't just want soemthing above bose.. I want a very nice sq sounding system. once i have the money in a couple of months i was thinking about getting the alpine 9815 headunit. what do you think? Yes i plan on installing myself, one i want to learn how to do it, second i don't want some other person touching my baby, because i know who ever else touches it they won't be as careful as i woudl be.

Everything I've read indicates that the 9815 is a great HU. For speakers you should take a look at the CDT HD-62CF's from thezeb.com $200/pair. Sound great. Its what I'm currently running. If you are looking for SQ then they are pretty hard to beat for the money.

I know this may sound cheap compared to what everyone else has for speakers, but I'm running a set of good ol Pioneer 6x9's in back and 6.5's in the front @ $85 a pair regardless of size from Best Buy. Get the warranty and you'll have free replacement speakers for 4 years. And trust me, it'll sound like you have subs in your car from what everyone at the TN meet told me. Right now I'm putting all my money into fixing all the neglect from the previous owner so I don't have $1000 to blow on a system. But if you want to spend the $$$, I won't be mad at ya

If you are putting things in yourself and don't have any experience, installing the components may give you trouble. You said you don't know anything about speakers, do you know what the difference is between regular coaxials and components? The components will sound better to a keen ear, however quality coaxials will still sound excellent. You'd probably be pretty happy with coaxials all around. That's just my opinion.

I heard the same thing about the Kappas, you'll need a beefy amp to push them. That's the case with any componet setup. So I looked at the Infinity Reference series and the Alpine S series. I finally decided on the Infinity series.
I have a 92 LS with the separate 80W amp not the 200W. A month or so ago I replaced all the Bose speakers with Infinity Reference series, 6002i for the front and 9603i for the rear. I'm still running the original HU and amp. After the change, the loudness went down a bit (going from 2 ohm to 4 ohm) but I expected that. The sound is great! I have no prob recommending the Infinitys for a straight swap although the highs (treble) are pretty strong. So a word of caution, don't go with 3-way speakers like I did, 2-way all around will be more than enough. As for fit, the front were cherry... easy change out, perfect alignment, the door panel was the worst part. In the rear, the rear screw holes don't quite align so I ended up using only 2 screws per speaker.

Its a misconception that the infinity kappa needs an amp. It can be ran off the deck, but output will suffer. For moderate listening, it will be nice. I take it that a lot of people here like their music very loud, so amping is a must. If you don't listen to music super louder, the kappas will be fine.
instead of using 6x9's for the rears, get some baffles and put in some 6.5". at higher volume, the cone will flex and distortion will increase. Just the simple nature of oval-shaped cones. You'll save a few bucks too. It your choice though. going with 4ohm will not hurt anything, except output. Not sure how much power the stock bose amp puts out, but at 4ohm, it should be putting out half of what it's rated at, at 2ohm. Stock speakers are designed to be more sensitive with little power than aftermarket speakers. But with aftermarket speakers and double the resistance, your output is most likely going to decrease substantially. another brand to look into is the Crystal Mobilesound at Sounddomain.com.

About a year ago I purchased the infinity kappa 692i (2ways).. I absolutely love them. The SQ is EXCELLENT. I've yet to hear any 6x9s that sound better. I really don't think the 3-ways are worth it: namely highs are excelent in the 2-ways and you only gain 1Khz in range w/ the 3-ways and you lose the ability to rotate the tweeter for imaging (careful... most head units and amps won't even go that high (22khz) so you will gain absolutely nothing). In fact, a friend of mine with a Dodge Avenger that came with a factory infinity system upgraded his 6x9s after hearing mine. Note that the factory system came with reference series speakers and all of the speakers amped (i'm not sure what the specs were, but infinity has never made good amps). Another friend built an entire system of kappas (as did I... minus subs). I had these speakers for about 3 or 4 months before I amped them (note that I loved them before I amped them). My head unit is a Rockford Fosgate RFX 8220; old, but still has 25W/ch. rms and it powered these speakers fairly well. HOWEVER, I don't think I got my monies worth out of my speakers until I amped them. I'm now using 2 JBL 90x2 rms amps (front/rear) and I was amazed at the difference in everything: SQ, loudness, BASS, Highs, everything. Once your head unit reaches its ceiling, you'll really start to notice the distortion. I listen to mostly rock/metal and in most cases very loud, but these speakers are fine for anything.
My recommendation would be to go with Infinity 2way reference series speakers. They will be cheaper and will sound virtually identical unamped. Actually there was a member here trying to sell those exact speakers... Legend4ever. I believe $60 shipped... Highly recommended. Also, I've got components in front right now and if I adjust my equalizer to add any trebble at all I literally get a headache. (just trying to sway you to 2ways .) My components were a pain to install. Just a forewarning.Either way good luck, I'm sure other brands sound good too I just really love infinity. ![]() When in doubt, don't buy. Visit a local car audio store and listen to different brands of speakers. -- good luck -- |
