4x4 Issues HELP!
Does anyone know anything about Chevrolet 4x4 trucks? I've been having this issue with my 2004 Z71 4x4 for a while now. When you start up the truck the light is suppose to be lit up on on the 2 wheel high button, but sometimes when i start it up none of the lights will light up. Other times it will light up but the dash will say "Service 4 wheel drive". Then when you try to change from 2 wheel high to 4 wheel high it doesn't do anything. Sometimes when i start it up it will work fine. I'm not sure if maybe some water got into something it wasn't suppose to be in a long time ago when i was in the forest. It didn't start doing it till long after i had been in the forest though, so i'm not totally sure that's the issue.

My advice is to get it checked out ASAP. Late 90's model Yukons, Tahoes, and Suburbans had a problem with electronically selectable 4WD. The wheels were known to just lock up while it was being driven. Whereas, earlier models with mechanically selectable 4WD never had that problem. I'm not saying that's the problem w/ your truck, or at least I hope not. But just to be sure you should get it checked.

Your recurrance issue could be a sign of faulty "Electronic Transfer Case" control unit/module... although it's premature but yes they do go out; especially if you go off roading a lot <= as previously mentioned, they are more susciptable to failure compare to the manually operated ones!
As stated, you should take it in for proper diagnosis... for an '04; any repair done should STILL be covered under warranty.

yeah, i figured it would still be covered under warranty, but if someone had the same issue before, i wasn't sure how soon i needed to take it in, b/c i work A LOT and don't have a lot of time to take it to the dealer. I don't get much sleep as it is.

Personally, I do not have any experience nor have work on any transfer case that are electronically controlled, but have done so numerous times with the manually controlled units... I'm just getting use to my '07 Silverado meself, which is equiped with this shift on-the-fly innovation; AUTO 4WD ftw
I've attempted to inquire and hoping to gather enough information from several stealership to no avail., they all have the same response... bring it in ASAP!!! Someday I might be in the same predicament as you are currently experiencing guyad... btw, have you checked the Chevy forums?

guyad, I had a brief conversation with a friend of mine; owns his automotive repair shop, he said that earlier versions of this electronic controlled transfer case has had a high flaw rate. Ford full-size trucks (FX4's) were supposedly plague with this issue as well, the vehicle itself is fine, something got to do with ETC's manufacturer.
Unfurtunately, HE also suggested to just schedule an appointment to the stealership for proper diagnosis. Although, I've yet to see any service bulletin posted, I've search high and low but came up empty. I'll send it your way if I come up with something. PS: Can you please keep us posted? thanks!

Ok...i took my truck in and had it checked out. The problem is a wiring harness that goes into the differential and another one that i believe they said goes into the steering column. Both of which they said there was a service bulletin out on and they have a new and "re-vamped" version of. Also another service bulletin they showed me was one a clicking noise in the steering column. I have that problem as well when i turn and hit random small bumps. Seems like there is more and more little finicky things that keep creeping up on me. One more i had was between about 50-60 MPH i can here my engine making this sound like it's trying to go into overdrive or something. Kinda like a slite revving sound of the exhaust. A friend of mine suggests it's possibly an issue with the torque converter. That's going to be checked out as well. All of these issues though are covered under warranty thank God. |

Found it that NONE of problems I have are covered under warranty. They say that the wiring harness that's bad is a "Wiring problem" and not covered under warranty. I think it's Bullshit. But just M.O

...I'd try different avenues; manufacturer maybe... I'll call my local Chevy stealership and see what kind of response I get!

yeah...I'm definately gonna give the chevy place a call and see what they say. I'm pretty sure they'll tell me to bring it in. The guys at Good Year were stupid and ordered both the wiring harnesses for the 4x4 before they knew if the warranty was gonna cover it. I may not be able to afford to pay to have it fixed right now if the warranty won't cover it.

Those num-nuts from Good Year are idiots... they should know better! btw guyad, I talked to a Chevy stealership SA and swears that ALL your issues should STILL be under warranty!!!
Schedule an appointment ASAP and they SHOULD take care of you. Goodluck.
