OK, from what I read, turn the key to acc and leave it for 10 minutes. Should start after that.

It could be the ignition or the key. I used to have a Grand Prix and it had all kinds of crazy problems. I ended up having a new key made. I think it was about $30-40.

Could you be more specific about the problem? Does it actually start for a second? Does it die when you put it in gear or just right after it catches? Do any lights blink on the dash? Check engine light lit? What would happen if you started it and immediately reved it - could you keep it running if you did this and held it at a high rpm?

We just had a 2001 Grand Am with this problem at the dealership I work at. We couldn't fix it so we took it to the Pontiac dealer. It was the ignition cylinder, it kept losing its passcode security. $400 later and it works like a charm.

I think it's possibly a fuel system immobilizer of some sort. Weird security feature on some GM's. My mechanic had one in the garage with a similar issue and there is some sort of procedure to reset it. I just left him a voicemail to get back to me with the procedure. IIRC you might need an OBDII scan/communicator tool.

I'd say Mastervtec is right about the passcode problem, and you'll almost certainly have to get it into the dealer to get it right. It's worth trying with a second key (if you have one and haven't tried that yet) in case the problem is with the chip on the key you're using.

I got a couple of door keys cut for my van (not chipped) and if I try to start it up with them it behaves exactly the way you describe. My van isn't a GM, but I suspect the system is pretty similar.

An interesting thing I figured out for my van is that I only need to hold the chipped key near the ignition cylinder for a couple of seconds when I start and it will run just fine with the dumb key. The verification just occurs at startup I guess ...
