Cool NALM Central 2008

EDIT: Hey whats up everyone? This thread was originally made in response to the other thread titled" ..next years NALM possibly back in Dallas" (something similar to that title). Now I say all this as giving an opinion and suggestion. I am clearly not here to step on toes, or take over so please dont get that impression. However I would like to offer my time, aide, and whatever else I can do to make NALM a great event with a great turnout. Now as several people have mentioned, I am completely aware I have not attended a NALM, that does not mean I cant contribute in some way. Several members have mentioned how it is time consuming and I believe planning would start way in advance, such as some of it is now. As stated in posts made by myself, the goal of a National Meet should be to raise turnout, have tons of fun, and network with a great group of people and enthusiants.

My belief was that NALM either needs to be done on one of these two ideas: 1)It should be held in a Central location to optimize new participation as well as gain maximize outreach to a-l members 2) Should be held on a three level basis- NALM West Coast, NALM Central, NALM East Coast...with that said, I understand the idea of a National meet is to happen once a year at one location. But you take what some have said about low turnout in Central Regions but alot has changed alone in Texas we could get 15+to attend. As for alternating coasts, I dont agree with excluding Central States. And in response to another thing brought up, timing is an issue for several if not many. I mean take our Houston members, I know that several of us would love to attend but not if its before finals and college level classes. And especially not for a 1 1/2 event. I think everyone would agree that the event needs to be extended, and I do believe that it should be put off till late May or early June. Which would allow vacation time as well as much travel time to get to the location whereve r it may be.

Where were you three years ago when it was in Dallas?

I think the idea of a "National" meet is that it's in just one location and is officially called the "National Meet" because it's just that - National. I'm all for Regional meets, and some of the most successfull meets (including the biggest meet) was a regional meet. If we (the Legend community) are shooting to have an annual, national meet, which I know I am, then I think we need to really keep with the format so far and move it every year. This year in Vegas we had a chance to talk to some of the NSX guys from NSXPrime and some of the original founders of the online Legend community and the impression I got was the NSXPO (the NSX National Meet) is held in a different location every year so more people could attend. There are die hards that attend every year regardless of location, but there is also a good mix of new people every year. There is a lot of structure that goes into the decision, and an entire week is planned out for the event.

While I think we're a ways off from that level of event, we need to start laying the groundwork for that now.

Now, please don't take this the wrong way, and understand that I'm not trying to be a dick about it, but for people who have never attended one of the National Meets (there have been 3 so far) that want to get involved, I would suggest becoming a part of one of them and then joining in the fun of deciding where the next one should be.

So far, we've pretty much picked the next years location at the current years event and it seems to grow every year. Why should we deviate from that?

Again - please don't take this as me being a dick, because I am not trying to be one. I want everyone to come to the National Meet and see how much fun it is. I would love to see cities competing to hold the next one and regardless if it is there that next year, they still come anyway wherever it is.

I agree that the idea of a National Meet is to be held once annualy at one location at that same time I think its great always to have it at place in which more people can attend.

Oh and in no way means, shape or form am I trying to take over someone elses job in organizing the whole event or being a decesion maker. I just wanted to give my input as well as offer my support and time into making a more Regional/National meet take place for next year.

As for the picking of next years meet while at the current years. I had saw the thread thus what I said previously, about how there was talk of it being in Dallas or Phoenix. Thus the thread:-p

But yeah I understand what your saying. Thanks for the response :-)

ooooooooooooooohhhhh, mike gets pwned by Brian! hahah jk

i hear where your coming from BriBri, it wouldnt be right for someone who hasnt attended any of the NALMs to come in and try to dictate, Mike dont take that as offensive, it would be the same if i tried too. Brian has been an influential part of these meets from what ive seen, so it would only be right for him to continue.

Plus if all fails, me and you can fly out to vegas next year, since ill be 21 and all GAMBLING!

Haha. See above response. In no way was I trying to take over or anything. I was trying to offer my help and assistance in getting something going for next year though. But yeah....

Oops! I did come off like a dick even though I was trying not too! I will charge that one to the lack of sleep

What I was really trying to do was encourage everybody to get involved in any way they can, be it Regionally or Nationally. There are a ton of great people on this forum (Tyson has met most of 'em ) and attending meets is the best way to break the ice since we're all there for the same reason.

As far as me personally, yes, I did plan most of the event this year, and Tyson and Dave helped me a TON, but this is not about me planning this event...this is about US planning this event. I like how we did it last year by posting a poll for the forum to vote on a region, and then posting another poll for a city within that region. We had decided on Vegas for 07 when we were in Tulsa in 06, and it just so happened that the poll confirmed that.

Here's to what xxxxxx in 08 holds

Haha. No its cool I'm not upset or bugging I totally understand. I just was giving my opinion and the thread was simply a response to the post I saw about 2008 possibly being in Dallas. Hah. But you definately have my aide or help if you need it where-ever the next National meet may be. And yes we can fly out to Vegas next time if its there. I can get us the hookup

I think its less that you came off like a dick, and more that you negated what he was offering. I don't think he said he wanted to plan the whole thing out and take charge, just that he would be willing to help out. I feel that at this point we can use as many people to get actively involved as possible. I can't see it hurting to have even new members (note that I am one) contributing.

I don't care what politics decide to title it, but I'm game for another Vegas meet next year. You won't see me driving to central USA, or to the east coast for a national meet.

i like a bid for the middle of the country (someone between the rockies and the appalachians is central enough for me . actually i like the idea of nashville, that will get a lot of the country (population wise since the east coast is more densely populated as a whole compared to west coast).

if we hold the meet some where in the middle of that blob to the east, we might get a big turnout. and we could get some CCers from cali come out (who knows!!). and i also agree that it should be extended to a 2-3 day event (since we schedule it around memorial day every year). if you can weasel your way out of work on friday (so leave thursday afternoon or friday morning) and then we can have saturday and sunday and have monday as a travel day. if people are closer to the event, they will require less travel time and more hanging time. i can testify that nashville is no more than 12 hours from houston (austin as well) and <10 hours from most other places. i just looked and its 13-14 hours from new york, which still isnt TERRIBLE. the only problem with nashville is that its 24 hours from phoenix, and 28 hours from LA (both taking I-40 most of the way). now is there anyone in tn/ky (or even atl isnt too far) that could point us in the direction of attractions and track options?

I wasn't negating his comments, at least I didn't mean to, but the fact remains that most of the people who get involved and try to influence the meet location never show up.

With that said, I'm sure the NALM regulars will try like hell to make next years meet regardless of location so lets get to it: NALM 2008 Region Poll

Either way, we used to come across the same discussion before every big meet, and the issues we ran into are the following:

Central is always a great idea because it makes everything closer to everyone than putting it on a coast. The downside is that, it makes it closer to everyone, but really close to nobody. The East and West Coasts have the highest population, and in theory more active people. So in effect, you take your two huge population areas and make it at least a day drive (real driving) from your meet. The only people within 4 hours of Nashville are people in Nashville, etc.

Our final determination was that we would alternate coasts. That way every other meet most of the population was within a day drive. The Central area isn't really that well populated, so the people from St. Louis, Chicago, Kansas City, would have to drive further but that is easily negated by having the NYC. Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, Charlotte people all closer. Same thing for the west coast. Putting it in a west coast area makes LA, San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas, SFO, all within a day drive and people from Texas (Brian) and the cities above have to drive a little further.

We put way too much thought into it, but it took us about 4 months of arguing to come to this conclusion. We also found out that the actual center of population for the country actually sits just west of St. Louis. Since there's more counties out east it throws the image off a little bit. That was one of our main issues also.

Hopefully it helps, I just figured I may be able to save some arguments.

well ive sent out PMs to as many of the members i could think of from Tx as i could think of, 15 so far, and thats people who will def go. thats not including Brian either, i know there are a few members up in Dallas too, Stella91Legend(i dunno if he still comes around) and a couple others i cant think of. im attending next years meet, wether it be flying or not, driving would be a plus but a year from now is hard to tell what the condition on Rose will be. I wouldnt mind driving to NM or OK but i wouldnt be able to Make it to NV in her. i know thats what stopped alot of other members, we talked about it at our last meet down here and the distance was stopping alot of people, and i know its far for other places. but this is a lose lose situation

Haha, I also sent out several pms to Houston area members, and our Lone Star Legends Representin lol. haha. But distance and the date is mainly the thing deciding whether I'm attending. Though I'd like to make the next one whether I have to walk, fly or drive lol haha
