My question could be a bit long so please bear with me.
So I have been back in Knoxville for some time now after graduating from a fairly expensive culinary school in the Northeast and I am growing tired of the Southeast and the South in general. What I am wondering, and have been for quite sometime now is how is it on the opposite coast?
Every time I see a show about the Pacific Northwest it seems like the place is a pretty good place to live if you work in the food industry. The seafood, wine, organics, farm to table places and all that comes with that. I'm sure that what I see on tv are just highlights so I want to know from the people who live out there what it is like and not just food wise but living quality, job market, cost of living all that BS that goes along with the possibility of relocating to the Pacfic Northwest.
I want to know your opinions good or bad and don't sugar coat it love it hate it. I want your opinions and honest answers. I suppose i need to come and visit just to see for myself as I have always wanted to go out that way and check it out.
So thanks for listening and let me know what you think

Awwww, man, thats just not right! See, one person is going to give the entire PNW a bad name?
I'm a Georgia transplant, let me throw that out first. I've been in the Seattle area since early 2000. I'm clamoring to get back to the Southease after feeling the aforementioned isolation (tucked all the way up here). Our job market is good, depending upon your skills, though we are on average with the national unemployment rate (6.3% or so here). If you're a naturalist, you'll love it here. Its never more than a short stint to parks, rock climbing, skiing, beaches, and so on. The cost of living is outrageous, but still better than CA... for now. Relocation costs are dependent upon what you're bringing with you, and make sure you get a newer U-Haul or hire someone to bring it out for you (we broke down twice in Colorado).
If you do decide to come out, let some of us know in advance; we can show you around the different areas and you can decide for yourself.

Caravan to Branson? My car is far to big of a rusted out hulk to go to some fancy meet.
I figured the cost of living would be much higher it is the west coast after all. I guess it seems I'm just tired of this part of the country after 10 years of being here in Vol country. I feel that it is time for a change of pace or at least try to hear some opinions from all the fine people on this fine board we have here.
Thanks for the input!

Seattle is great. I do agree that the cost of living is outrageous though. We have a great food industry (I just saw a Seattle chef compete against Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America last night! ) Just read this also, Seattle is number 6 : America's Most and Least Favorite Cities - Yahoo! Real Estate
good cooks are welcome everywhere they go. That's all that means. As for the Pacific NW this is a really nice place. I find the people here quite friendly. You can do demographic searches that should give you the bacics of the information you are looking for. I would think you could call a cullinary arts school out here and see how their graduates are doing.
Were'nt you going to do some electrical diagnostics on your car. Did that project get ditched?
No the electrical testing is just slightly askew. I am still in the process of finding the voltmeter. I did however change the fuel filter and oil. So yes I will be doing the tests hopefully soon!
While I will never doubt the old motor in the wont die dept. It is the worn out steering, beat down suspension and CVs that are about to let go catastrophically I might add at any time, the old girl is tip top.

Minor details . No, seriously, at least ride with us . . . heck, we may need another driver for another Legend. Too many rocketships, not enough pilots.
Its a work in progress I still have @ least 3 months who knows I may even get those work equip wheels Ive always wanted. hahahahaha

My personal experience, as far as the food industry, doesn't extend beyond a few close friends that work in restaurants. Those friends, however, are all extremely happy and love their jobs. 2 of them make 80k a year with no HS diploma. The third is the head chef of Salty's, and makes well over 100k. With so many different cultures and restaurants, I would bet the job market for you would be solid. I could probably get you a job interview at Salty's if you decide to come up.
The biggest drawback to the NW is the weather. more specifically the rain. It rains almost everyday from October to May. People actually kill themselves because of it. seriously. It makes it quite difficult to have Legend meets , but the summers are pretty mild and it rarely gets too cold.
That being said, I love it here. The people are cool, laid back, and open minded. The music scene is good. There's lots to do outside with great Disc Golf courses. Oh and there's Legends everywhere
^^^ The weather was one thing I was curious about I had heard it rained quite often and wasn't sure if it was just hearsay. There is no way I would ever make that kind of money working in a restaurant here in Knoxville so that is good to hear that that kind of potential is out there.
I do play disc golf and do have a legend plus I heard that the MK 1 VWs were pretty good out there. It looks like I will be saving up for a little exploration trip out that way!
