I know this car pretty damn well...it was designed by Delorean...it's a piece of shit...not the most reliable and ugly as sin....also heavy, requires premium fuel and underpowered and only the middle portion of the window goes down/up (just like the delorean)

delorean did not design it, but yes, giogetto giugario did design the delorean and the svx....but he also designed fthe BMW M1, the lotus espirit the lexus GS, and for bughatti lamborghini and ferrari Giorgetto Giugiaro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and he won car designer of the century in 1998 (year following the last svx)

how "pretty damn well" do you really know this car?

ive owned 6 svx's (two 92 LSL, a 94fwd, and three 97 LSi) and i can help you with some facts

the 92-94 svx's are crap... the transmissions were horrible... the bearings were too... the early ones also had bad issues with widow switches and the sunroof motors (the automatic seatbelts in the 92's were annoying too)

those problems were fixed in 1995 where new prepacked bearings were used and the transmissions were made more stable

i personally would only drive the 97 i have 3 97's and the one with 171k on it drives like its brand new... never needed anytihng more than a timing belt at 115k (didnt break just routine preventative maintainence) and an alternator at 150k

rotors dont warp if you get the proper kind.... drilled and or slotted are reccomended with ceramic pads to cut heat... it is a heavy car mind you and if you like to jam the brakes then youll wear them a bit

the H-6 boxer engine is BULLETPROOF its a 4 cam 24 valve 3.3 liter

the svx is NOT a sports car, its got a 3800lb curb weight... id compare it more to the later style T-bird ('02 thunderbirds also weighed about 3700 lbs), the caddilac eldorado, or the jaguar xjs.... not the nissan 300 and mitsu 3000 like most people do. its designed for comfort and cruising.... its a touring car... not a douchebag street racer with coffee can exhaust

i hope you wouldnt buy a pontiac fiero because it "looks fast"

comparing an acura legend to an SVX is like comparing a saleen s7 to a bentley contenintal gt

apples and oranges

its goot good power but its not made for a dragway

actually... on paper the stock 1997 SVX is pretty close to identicle to the 2008 bmw 328i (cept the svx has 28 more foot lbs of torque)

its true that the svx doesnt share parts with any other car (not like the acuras that we can loot the hondas for) but parts arent hard to come by because finding a 1992-96 svx being parted out is simple... the svx networks and ebay are swarming with parts form earlier models (14000 were made. however the 97s were only limited to 640 and they can be relitively cheap if you buy off the networks) usually the only parts you might find expensive are exhaust parts (its got 3 cats) and the 02 sensors.

the headlights do tend to yellow after time but thats typical for not having glass lenses

the awd svx does infact get 230hp with 228 foot lbs of torque tohugh some earlier 92's had been found to get as much as 240whp due to an ecu difference (it changes mid 92 for some reason)

i average about 24.5 mpg on premium fuel in the automatics (AWD) and i get 28mpg in my stick... mind you it also has an 18.5 gallon tank that goes for about 400-450 miles... now the premium fuel does gives you better milage, and it only accounts for a few dollars difference. if you got the regualr itll run like it hated you and get about 18mpg... if premium is not available you can sneak 89-91 grade as a temp measure but i only use 93

one of my 97 svx's has 171k on it all original and it drives better than the 92 i owned with under 60k on it

i did have a 94 with FWD and i got the same gas milage as the awd and it was not hard to spin the wheels... the FWD only saves you about 400lbs of weight... i dont reccomend it it handles half as well as the AWD

the window within window is a love it or leave it but consider you can have the windows down on the highway and still have a conversation, and you dont get misted

the car was built for safety and comfort...not street racing

it has tilt/telescoping steering wheel

speed sensitive adaptive power steering

speed sensitive wipers

heated mirrors and seats

digital climate control

the "power mode" wich is a driver initiated electronic performance feature (almost seems like a 2nd overdrive)

now it has a 3.3L boxer 6 engine it can handle up to 700hp without modification

they make a bolt on twin screw supercharger that runs up to 12psi

the one problem is replacing a windshield. because they were made with a titaniam oxide coating, they are very expensive to replace (800 for just the glass at a subaru dealer) and the coating makes it so EZ pass wont transmit through it ( i just hold mine out the window or sunroof)

they also do not have real cup holders (there is a "cup holder" in the center console but it is removeable and set too far back for any practical use)

but it has plenty of power, and it is built 10000 times nicer than the WRX

also they only came with the 4 eat tranny (4 speed automatic) though the 2002 impreza trannie is practically a "bolt on"

the awd system is a 90%front-10% rear changing to 50-50 on slip (you cant spin the wheels in an awd SVX) the jdm setup gives you a 65% rear-35% front changing to a 50-50

the jdm version also has an all wheel steer option as well as fold in mirrors and a rear dash air purifier

this is a a great car to cruise in very solid and the awd is great snow storms feel like prime conditions

but it is NOT a fast n furious "ricer" with a buzzfarting exhaust and crazy body kits with vents on every 3rd inch (and lets not forget the decals that add a percieved 30hp each).

if you want a car to blast people in the middle of the night from stoplight to stoplight, go get a '93 turbo II rx-7

if you want a very comfortable solid AWD daily driver... get an svx

ill be willing to answer any svx questions you have

here is my weekend cruiser, a '97 svx with jdm clear corners, rear light and hood emblum and an 02 impreza 5 speed manual

she wont win at the track but she does pretty much what i want her to when i want her to and shes more comfortable than the audi cabriolet ('98) ive owned and shes more responsive than the rx-7 ('90) ive owned...without the crazy fishtailing in the slightest wet condition.

i have a black 97 on ebay right now ( eBay Motors: Subaru : SVX (item 330267492252 end time Sep-08-08 17:44:38 PDT)) with a red 97 to follow when it sells (2nd baby on the way is causing the mother to want to cut back on the cars i can have)

and the integra TYPE r i owned (97) and the prelude (98) felt like pieces of paper by comparison

kureno keroppi guy..riddle me this than batman....

if the svx was such a good car, why did Subaru discontinue it and if you ever were to walk into a subaru dealer and dare to utter its three letter name, the subaru sales ppl (if they've been around) shutter at the hearing???

I have an 07 Subaru Legacy LTD.....and I've been in the subaru world for some time now....

they didnt sell very well and thats a shame... its a love it or leave it styling and at the time a $35000-$40,000 subaru was a bit high end on the subaru market for upper-middle class luxury consumersat that time. the market for the svx would most likely not even gone to a subaru dealership and probly stayed at saab, volvo, bmw or mercedes

if it had been released today it would be a different story as the demographic to subaru has changed to include more upper class buyers.

subaru also debuted them at $5k less than the production cost (a similar tatic was used in rebadging the wrx as the saab 93 aero and dropping the price 5k)

the dealers shudder at the name because they dont know very well how to work on it as they probly havnt seen more than a handful in the past decade and a half and the mechanic turnaround doesnt help... they just arent educated enough (i had a syubaru tech once ask me if it was a 4 or 6 cyl) fortunately, my "to be" father in law owns a mechanic shop. find me a mazda place that doesnt do the same with an rx-7

as for your 07 subaru... the lagacy ltd is a completely different beast. i wouldnt compare them in anyway shape or form. unfortunately the closest thing to the svx was the XT (and that really doesnt even compare either) i have an 05 baja which is not terribly different from your legacy and owning both i can say nice as they handle, they really dont match up to an SVX

thats like saying you know everything about the acura NSX and think it is crap because you have driven an 08 honda civic... there simply wasnt enough people aware when they were new.. i dont recall ever seeing a commecial for them or anything. low production, low availability, lack of agressive advertising all are to blame for the svx.

its ok if you think they are ugly, (i feel the same way about the square nose 4 door integra, and the WRX) and after 5 years and 14,000 production cars subaru discontinued them and put out the wrx which was cheaper (putting some bells and whistles on the impreza was cheaper than building another car from the ground up (like the lancer EVO)

riddle ME this... why does any car manufacturer change the body style every few years so (honda and acura certainly not excluded)... i think 5 years for an svx to be pretty virtually unchanged in style, HP and engine is not that bad. hell even the jeep wrangler has slight (very slight) changes every 5-10 years... the SVX ran for a generation then bowed out doing everything perfect in the final year with a production of 640 units.

isuzu did it with the vehicross and amigo less sucessfully with higher production numbers in fewer years, as did the pontiac with the new GTO

if the integra was sold in 14000 quaity for a 5 year run youd not see as many on the road either

mind you most subaru dealerships only got 1 or 2 svx's and they sold pretty much every single one (kinda like the new gto)

but as i said... in 1992 subarus werent well known to the luxury market where as today they are more on the level of volvo and saab

i mean maybe they shoulda done like toyota and honda and nissan and created there own version of the lexus, acura and infiniti

but then again how many of you would be so die hard if acura only ever had been known as honda and the name never existed?

honda in a luxury market in late 1980, early 90s??? im sure theyd spend the money on the bmws and the mercedes too

then again... im simply responding to the original question so he can make an educated choice for his wife... im not in a pissing contest here... i have owned honda and acura and i have nothing terrible to say about the cars. im not saying that all other cars are pieces of crap... i am saying that of all the cars i have owned i have enjoyed the SVX overall (out of the 18 cars i have owned, its the only car i have ever bought more than once)

i believe that a 95-97 svx would be fantastic for his wife... i expect after some time he would get one for himself after driving it.... my finacee ended up with her own too after driving one of mine.... though the baby made her decide to give up her svx for a toyota sienna daily driver

also the one in the ad you linked isnt a terrible price but i would be very careful of a 94 with that milage (the 94s offered alot of trims and options and its not uncommon to find one thats been pieced together from several others... plus you may have that dreaded bearing issue) be sure to also check the a/c and cruise control and all the power switches as the cruise control and a/c are a good indicator of tranny swapping or failing.

for the same or little more youll be able to find a good 95 with around 100k

avoid overmodified svx's its still very easy still to find them with one owner girage kept and completely stock

id expect to pay anywhere from 5-7 grand for an excellent condition 95,96 or 97 in the 70-110k mile range

a very nice low milage (under 50k) 96 or 97 could go for upwards of $10,000

also rest assured you will always be able to sell it for as much if not more than you paid for it (the value is gradually going up now thatthey are being recognised as collectible)

go to subaru-svx.net or svxworldforums.com

and never buy any svx from vineland NJ (some eastern european jerks specifically in vineland NJ or that area sell freshly painted and detailed cars that have been flooded or salvaged) they have been numerous times banned from ebay and are well known in the svx community and have been known to post the same cars/parts several times and bail and have even used pictures that arent even theirs (a friend of mine's car was used in the pics of an ebay auction by them)

whatever you are smoking, I want some....

Subaru will NEVER be luxury class nor geared towards upper class because of such. Just because my subaru has fake wood and heated leather, doesn;t make it luxury...it just makes it a step above economy.

and equating an XT forrester with a 2.5L boxer turbo to an SVX with an NA V6 is ludacris. Just because they both have about 230hp, doesn't mean jack

and btw for the record, SVX are cheap around these parts. I know a girl who has a blue 97 SVX FWD (not AWD) and paid about $4k for hers with under $90k about a year or so ago..

Thanks for the book about SVX's. Alot of good info there.
Wow. You really hate ricers I hope you didn't think by my mods that I was planning to do the same with one of those.

The one I was looking at I got her down to $3000. I don't think I will buy it though. I did drive it and I hated it. It was really really slow for having 30 more horsepower than my car. The brakes felt like they hardly worked. I hate the windows. (I didn't think I would mind them but I did) I liked the paint and it was in really good condition but it did have rust under the door protector. (alot i'm guessing) It does have a few minor mechanical problems that I would have to fix right away. Working on a flat engine is a PITA so I decided to skip it.

Legends are superior in every way to that car (I didn't even like the AWD)

to each their own... its why i have a 97 and a stick in my good svx

and mods are ok so long as its done tastefully your car is actually quite beautiful

i was talking more of the 5 foot wing, lambo doors, giant bolt on hood scoops that dont even go INTO the hood let alone attach to anything, bodykits that give you 1/4 inch ground clearance that crack and break on the slightest hill or speedbump.

the svx in the post above is probly about as modified as your car is...and i like it 10x better than the acura i had, and i liked my acura better than alot of other cars...no bad blood there

and i absolotely love how the SVX is unique and not a rebadged version of another car with some extra bells and whistles (any ford/mercury, the lexus es/toyota camry, nissan maxima/infiniti 130, and *gasp* the honda accord/acura TL)

....and i dont know who's svx ran over heath's favorite kitten but that guy needs to know that somewhere out there paul walker appreciated his full hearted argument that wasnt really there.

he needs to go to wikipedia and look up the svx

(either that or he's just a griefer)

ask a question, get an answer...its what i do

good luck in finding a "wifemobile"
