college choices

i am about to start applying to business schools so that i can pursue an MBA. the problem is, i haven't visited any of the schools i am interested in yet. i take my gmat again on tuesday so we'll see how i do. i did pretty decent on it last time i took it but i want to do even better. anyways, does anyone know anything about these schools in terms of their reputation or if any of you has gone to them (they are ranked in order of where i would want to go):

1. DePaul University - Chicago, IL where I would get an MBA in real estate
2. Vanderbilt - Nashville, TN where I would get an MBA in finance
3. American University - Washington, D.C. where I would get an MBA in real estate
4. University of Miami - Miami, FL where I would get an MBA in finance
5. University of San Francisco - San Francisco, CA where I would get an MBA in finance.

I am not sure about Univ. of San Francisco. I was looking online and San Francisco State seems to be bigger. The problem I have with San Francisco State is the website looks like it was done by someone in high school and the requirements to get in aren't that high. I want to pursue a career in real estate development/asset management and either start my own company eventually or work with a large developer. unfortunately there are not a lot of schools that offer an MBA in real estate but a lot of the finance programs have real estate courses available.

What? How do you figure? US News ranks in no. 115th in National Universities, and thats US News..!

Anyway, to the original poster, I suggest looking at the following:

PSU University Park - Smeal. I may be biased because I go there, but unlike the top schools there is a chance of getting in, and the actual business program is VERY highly ranked in some reviews, even in the top 10. Also, PSU just spent some outrageous figure (60 million?) on the business complex, and the building and all amentities are BRAND SPANKING NEW.

As for the top schools, I really don't know how people get in. My girlfriend had a 1580 on her SATs, 800 on three SAT IIs, a bunch of activities, etc. etc., and she still got deferred from Wharton.

As for your current list, the only one that really stands out is University of Miami. Perhaphs its my northern-snob bias, but that's just a crap school.

Anyway, heres a list for you:

1. Harvard University (MA)

2. Stanford University (CA)

2. University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)

4. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan)

4. Northwestern University (Kellogg) (IL)

6. Dartmouth College (Tuck) (NH)

17. Carnegie Mellon University (Tepper) (PA)

18. Emory University (Goizueta) (GA)

18. University of Texas–Austin (McCombs)

18. University of Washington

21. Ohio State University (Fisher)

Perhaps confusion of schools.

University of San Francisco is likely of lower calibre and certainly not in the top 20.

UCSF (aka University of California at San Francisco) is only a health professionals university with a major league School of Medicine. No business school there.

If you want to go to Vandi just let me know. My uncle was the Vice-Chanslor there. He got me accepted to the engineering program when I was in the 10th grade. I can get you in the door. After that it is all on you.

Nashville is an awsome town. You get to see such a variety of people, plenty of history, and some of the best shows and concerts around. Don't miss BBKings Bday party on 1st ave! Last time I was there I saw Ernest P. Whorile in a limo with some young chicks that had a video camera.

Later!

Looks like you're well on your way to a great education; those are all great schools. Where did you complete your undergrad? My only advice is to go where you get the most "value" -- if someone offers you grants and scholarships, lean toward that option. Any of those schools do have a great reputation so I don't think you can go wrong.

For me, I just graduated with my BA in Management yesterday and had to make the same decision. I was accepted to two different grad programs and I ended up deciding on the one that offered the most potential -- even though it's quite a bit more expensive (to the tune of $60k). Education is a huge investment; but IMO you get what you pay for. My end decision was a school in PHX, AZ called Thunderbird. Per US News & World Report:

"For 10 consecutive years, Thunderbird's MBA program has held the title of "#1 in International Business" among America's best graduate business schools, including Wharton, Columbia, and Harvard."

The cool thing about the T-Bird program is that you can complete it in one year -- three trimesters (spring, summer, fall) and so I'm hoping to be finished by December a year from now.

Good luck no matter what you decide!

Penn State's Smeal College of Business is one of the best schools in the nation. I forget who it was, but about a month ago our school paper posted an article that one of the top business magazines ranked us #8 overall in the nation. Arnach, maybe you could help me out on this one. Either way, its a great school, and if you look online, you can find all the rankings you need.

I have a B/A in Finance and B/A in Advertising from Michigan State University. I need to get out of Michigan though and experience someplace else. I have been going back and forth on choices for a few months now. Lee, I might need to take you up on that offer regarding Vanderbilt. We'll see. Tomorrow I take my GMAT again for the last time.
