Desis/Hindus Sign This Petition! (American Eagle)

You probly already seen it, if not there you go.

Quote:
American Eagle Outfitters has enraged, and insulted the global Hindu community by designing and marketing flip flops (shoes) with the image of Lord Ganesh (Ganesha) on the in-sole of the shoes.

American Eagle Outfitters (NASDAQ: AEOS) operates 699 AE stores in 48 states and the District of Columbia, 58 AE stores in Canada, and 111 Bluenotes/Thriftys stores in Canada.

AHAD representatives have visited American Eagle Outfitters stores in various parts of the country and verified that the flip flops are available nationwide. Our representative has digitized the image of the flip flop which is presented on this web page.

Representatives of AHAD have called American Eagle Outfitters expressing their outrage at the insult Lord Ganesha, and demanding the flip flops with Lord Ganesha's image on it, however, this request has gone unheeded.

AHAD now launches its official protest against American Eagle Outfitters

Hindus consider shoes to be "dirty" and do not wear them at home or temples. It is a common Hindu practice to remove shoes before entering homes or temples. This is why, putting the image of Lord Ganesh on flip flops is particularly offensive and disgraceful.

Hindus worship Lord Ganesh as the most auspicious from of God. Before the beginning of any activity, Hindus invoke the name of Lord Ganesh and seek His blessings. To have Lord Ganesh on the in-sole of the shoe signifies trampling upon the deity.

We are certain that the reaction of the Christian, Jewish, or Moslem community would have been equally outrageous if their revered symbols were placed on the flip flops. It is most likely due to the fear of the reaction of the Christian, Jewish and Moslem community that the American Eagle Outfitters has chosen to bring out the flip flop with a Hindu religious symbol - Lord Ganesha - while avoiding Christian, Moslem, or Jewish symbols.

AHAD demands that American Eagle Outfitters immediately withdraw the flip flops from the market and issues an unequivocal apology to the Hindu community.

And before some of you go, who cares or its nonsense, it does make sense if you have any idea behind our culture. Its not like I see Jesus Christ on his cross (or whatever your religion maybe) stamped along flip flops now do I? Now the shirts which they also have to match the sandals, I don't care as much.

yeah they will get publicity, but it could be negative publicity. i personally wouldn't want to offend anybody if i owned a business and was trying to attract consumers. plus you have to think about the design costs for this as a sunk cost if they do drop it. i don't know how salvageable the materials are, i am sure they can use the basic flip flops and dye them some other color and resell them.

Yes, definitely negative publicity, last year we were able to get Abercrombie and Fitch to pull everything off their shelves and have the president of AF publicly apologize to the Asian American community.

I just signed the petition. I think its all wrong, with using religion or cultural beliefs to promote business in that sense. In Hindu temples and most other religious shrines, shoes are not allowed as a respect to God and one should not violate that. Now putting a picture of that God onto your slippers/etc would be extreme to Hindus and other religious followers as you are basically stomping on your God that you worship and respect. If it was on a T shirt, it probably wouldnt be a big deal.
I see the "Om" T shirts at aeropostale, which to me is fine as it doesnt take away from anything. There has to be a lmit to what is acceptable and what isint. Next thing you know, Lord Ganesh might show up on a roll of toilet paper. Ya never know whats next .

It's funny because I'm Asian (Vietnamese) and I was inside an A&F store when those shirts were out on the shelves. I initially didn't like them but right after that, I heard about all the controversy surrounding them that lead to them being pulled. That's when I decided that I had to have one. I looked all around for them but couldn't find them anywhere. I finally managed to find them on Ebay and bought 3. Now every time I walk into an A&F store wearing one of those shirts, someone always tries to buy it off me.

My whole position on the A&F thing was that I just thought people needed to lighten up. The shirts were meant as jokes and if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? Besides, they weren't even that offensive. There are more important things to fight for and it seemed like people were protesting simply for the sake of protesting. Don't get me wrong. I agree with you guys completely about the AE flip flop controversy. Putting an image on a shirt is one thing, but putting it in a place that's constantly stepped on is another, especially considering the Hindi view on feet and shoes.

All my vietnamese friends here were very offended by the t-shirt, if you agree that AE was wrong, then how can you not think AF is wrong also? half the shirts were make fun of asian religous icons.
