Detailing Product updates from SEMA/AAPEX

Here's an e-mail I just got, some good info for the detailing guys:

Classic Motoring Accessories Proper Auto Care Club, No. 6
by Terry Freiberg,

Welcome to the Show!

Greetings from the world’s largest automotive aftermarket show. Held each year in November, the SEMA/AAPEX Show is actually two conventions in one.

SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Market Association, hosts over 1,500 exhibitors at the Las Vegas Convention Center. SEMA exhibitors include manufacturers of wheels and performance tires, racing & performance products, restoration products, restyling products and accessories. Open only to the trade, SEMA is a four-day whirlwind ride through a world of restyled, tricked-out and custom painted vehicles sporting every conceivable accessory.

Held at the same time, AAPEX, the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo, features 1,700 exhibitors that cover every square inch of the 1.2 million square foot Sands Expo Center. It’s huge! AAPEX captures the global aftermarket industry with exhibitors from dozens of countries. AAPEX exhibitors focus on paint & body products, machine shop tools & equipment, medium & heavy trucks and sport utility vehicles.
Happy motoring,
Terry Freiberg
President
Classic Motoring Accessories

Get a glimpse of what’s in store for 2003!

Covercraft – Just when I thought the ultimate car cover, WeatherShield, couldn’t get any better; Covercraft unveiled WeatherShield HD (Heavy Duty). This new fabric is a solution dyed, 300 denier woven polyester fabric featuring Nextec’s patented encapsulation process. Not only does this fabric shed water like a duck’s back, it carries a five-year warranty against UV deterioration. If you live in a climate of intense UV (Florida, Texas, Arizona, N.M.) and must park your car outdoors year around, this is the best investment you can make to protect your car’s finish. These state-of-the-art covers will be pricey, starting around $300.00 for small vehicles.

Meguiar’s – Some great new products here including a high gloss, Hot Shine Tire Spray that features an adjustable spray nozzle. This patented nozzle allows you to dial in the spray pattern to cover the exact profile of your car’s tire. Meguiar’s Professional Division Spokesperson, David Pedre, claims one aerosol bottle of Hot Shine Tire Spray will shine 50 tires!
Meguiar’s also debuted a 2-step, leather cleaner and leather conditioner containing Aloe. These new leather formulas are said to remove stains of coffee, lipstick, ice cream, grease, tar and ketchup and still keep the hide soft, supple and protected.
Also introduced was a Detailer Products Line including the All Purpose Cleaner Plus that we already have in stock and a new water-based, non-flammable engine dressing, Engine Kote, which we will have shortly.
Saving the best for last, Meguiar’s will have a Video Detailing Tape available in 30 days explaining how to detail using both a dual-action polisher (Porter Cable 7424) and a professional, circular polisher. This 55-minute video will take the enthusiast through every process of compounding, polishing and finishing, step-by-step.

Eagle One – Newly re-formulated, A-Z Wheel Cleaner maintains its cleaning punch but is now safe for aluminum wheels with or without a clear coat. This new formula also cleans tires. A new label is in the works with a name change to “Tire & Wheel” Cleaner.

Lexol – No new products here but the company is experiencing explosive growth in their Vinylex product for vinyl and rubber care. We can attest to this as our customer feedback on Vinylex has been outstanding. Vinylex is a water-based cleaner/conditioner with a strong UV sun block to prevent your car’s vinyl dash from fading and cracking and just enough gloss to make tires look great.

MacNeil/WeatherTech – MacNeil introduced Clear Covers, a new, competitively priced license plate frame line. These molded plastic frames will be available in a black, chrome and gold finish and feature a built-in rubber seal to protect your license plate against dirt and moisture. Product Specialist, Del Hollingsworth, says each plate will come with a handful of hardware and a guide that specifies the correct hardware for your car. Very thoughtful! These will be in stock in time to include on your list to Santa.

Black Again (North American Oil) – The companion, interior dressing to Black Again, Somthin’Else, has been completely reformulated and renamed New Again. The new formula contains a whopping 70% polymer content that will insure a great looking shine for 90 to 120 days! (The famous “A” brand contains about 4% polymer content.) New Again can be used on any vinyl or rubber surface but is ideal for restoring luster to the dash and door moldings on older vehicles.

X-PEL – These are the people that make our Headlight Protection Film Kits. They are working day and night cutting new patterns for the 2003 models. If you have an application question, call us at 1-800-628-7596 and we’ll tell you if we have a pattern to fit your 2003 vehicle. This transparent film absolutely does not alter the light output or pattern in any way but will protect your expensive headlight lenses from thrown stones and road debris. I’ve put these film kits on every car I’ve owned.

3M – Things are very hush-hush at 3M but a senior Product Specialist confirmed that a whole new product line, tentatively named Perfect-It III, will be released mid 2003. These new products will be especially formulated to compound, polish and glaze the new, harder clear coat finishes that are very prone to swirls and scratches. We will have these products as soon as they are available.

Luster Lace – Company President, Robert Flores, is now running two shifts to keep up with the demand for his innovative metal polish. Luster Lace is a unique system for polishing tubular and round objects. Once a best kept secret in the motorcycle industry, Luster Lace has been discovered by Hot Rod enthusiasts and sales have exploded. This company also makes one our favorite quick detail sprays, Luster Detailer. This spray-and-wipe product lifts bug residues, bird droppings and light road film from painted surfaces, chrome, fiberglass, plastic and glass. I saw this detail spray being used by several exhibitors on their show cars.

What’s Not Hot?

We found several companies selling cheap (under $1.00) Microfiber cloths from China. The cloths I held had a very coarse feel. Despite claims of being 100% Microfiber, I remain unconvinced about the quality of these products. We’ll leave these cloths for our competitors to sell. Thinking of this reminds me of the Chinese proverb, “The bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

Ditto in the area of foam polishing and buffing pads and Velcro backing plates. The popularity of the Porter Cable 7424 dual-action polisher has created a demand for hook-and-loop foam polishing pads and backing plates. On some of the samples I saw (from China), the hook-and-loop backing was already peeling away from the foam pad. These pads haven’t even been used yet and they’re already falling apart! No paint and body shop supplier would touch these pads but be prepared to see them in auto parts stores and mass-merchandise stores. Again, buyers beware.

Hot Late-Breaking News

I’m proud to announce that we have reached an agreement with Menzerna of Germany to offer their professional polishes to American enthusiasts. Menzerna supplies compounds and polishes to all of Germany’s automakers. Menzerna is largely credited for the famous finishes on Mercedes Benz cars and is used at the new Mayback plant. (The new $300,000 marque being launched by Daimler-Benz.) These are very unique, water-based products that will allow the enthusiast to restore and maintain the finish on their car to factory standards. Labels are being printed now in English and we’ll have these products in January 2003.

Good Info Mike!

What is the best product to use on the interior? I am using an eagle 1 all purpose interior spray, and it just ran out so now I need some stuff. I hear all the bickering though about products that crack your dash, and blah blah blah.... so which is the best?

Do you have a link or some info yourself on interior cleaners for the dash etc....?

Thanx

As Mike lists in his post the best product for interior dash and trim is Vinylex by Lexol. I've tried pretty much all the others on the market and find that Vinylex goes on the easiest and stays on the longest. It is quite a bit more expensive but trust me it is worth it.

I got my dad to order me lexol leather cleaner and conditioner from the states. It is a great product.

Is Vinylex one of those products you can only buy through the web? Or would you have to order it from a store?

Thanx Koji

Vinylex or 303 Aerospace.

I prefer the low gloss shine of 303 aerospace for the dash. I also have vinylex which I prefer to use on black plastic trim. Both are water and non-silicone (prevent cracking) based, just vinylex has more gloss-shine.

Stay away from the silicone base (i.e. armor-all)
