difference between PCI and AGP video card?
I have to get a new video card so that I can play NFS underground.
My old Nvida vanta 8mb can't even turn the game on. I have a 3 year old Hp pavilion P3 650 mhz computer. Can anyone tell me what is the difference between a agp and pci video card. I know PCI is the slot where the video card goes into but can i use a AGP card? thanks Esti

you cant use an AGP card in a PCI slot because they are completely different. Go to any website that tells you about motherboard configuration and it will show you the difference. You should have an open PCI available if you havent filled it up with other cards. Basically either one will not fit in the other's slot because they just wont. It is kinda like trying to put DDR ram into an SD ram board. hope this clears it up for you.

Well, I think it is time for you to upgrade your computer. Your PIII-650Mhz even with the latest GeForce FX5950 will not perform to the fullest, because the bottleneck is most probably your bus speed, processor sped etc. So you will not get acceptable playable framerate from the system. This is just my suggestion. And, the difference between PCI and AGP is, PCI can be used for almost anything add-on card, while AGP is only used my Graphic Card, because it has wider bandwith for improved performance. And, you can check your motherboard. If, you have the brown slot, kinda away from the back of the motherboard, and closest to the processor, that means you have AGP. But, I still strongly recommend you upgrade your whole system to be able to play that game. Long time no see man, by the way...... ![]() |

You might just want to buy a new one from Dell Small Business (not Dell Home; the Small Business section has better deals. Just put your name when it asks for the "Business").
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...=04&l=en&s=bsd If you're going to stick with your current one, then there are a limited amount of video card options for a PCI slot. Hope that helps. ![]() |

thanks for links.
After all the great advise and talking with nickD, I think i'm just going to leave my pc alone and get a ps2. I will be probably be cheaper and easier in the long run. Thanks again Esti

wow, no one has actually said what the difference is.
there are two different kinds of PCI slots, and two different kinds of AGP slots. the difference between AGP and PCI, is the AGP slot has a TON more bandwidth available. meaning, you can transfer more information per second than on a pci slot. there is a 33mhz PCI slot, and a 66mhz PCI slot. A 33mhz is what you see in basically all computers made in the past few years, generally 3, 4, 5, 6 of them on a motherboard. then there is the 66mhz PCI slot, which allows double the amount of bandwidth, but the slot is also about twice as long as a 33mhz is. the big ones are generally used for servers, and they use the slots for RAID cards, or gigabit lan cards....something like that. now the AGP slots, there is a normal AGP slot, and an AGP PRO slot. the AGP pro is usually only seen on server motherboards, and is really only useful for the video cards that movie makers use to animate the CG movies and whatnot. all it does is allow more bandwidth, due to having more pins to connect to. the normal AGP slot is what most motherboards use, and all high end video cards will plug into. (very few AGP PRO video cards, and they are ~$1000 usually) |

apg is specifly made for video graphic card while pci can be used for video card, sound, modem, etc
edit: i forgot to mention as well that video cards that uses apg tend to have newer technology then pci cards i don't think they make pci video card anymore. if your just planning to upgrade your video card try getting a good one like geforce 4 or something in that area then you won't complain as much as i do when i play video games if your also serious about playing with better framerates then upgrade your whole motherboard+cpu and add rams ![]() Last edited by pipes_0 : 12-19-03 at 08:26 PM. |

stuff like sound cards, modems, lan cards, TV tuner cards, do not take very much bandwidth, but some of the high end cards of today are starting to close in on the limitation of the AGP port. |

I have an AGP Pro slot, but I have an AGP regular card on it, IT CAUSES all sorts of problems beacuse there is too much "play" in the slot.... (sometimes only uses half of the available video memory) So i gotta manually push it in and tighten it every couple of days. On the newer motherboard designs I noticed they put a latch now... !!! SORRY IM JUST VENTING >=(
