Unhappy e36 + understeer =

Well, so much for track car ... Went wide in turn 1 right after the front straight, and slid right off the track, into the wall, and flipped it. Amazingly, only got a scrape on my back, and a bruise from the seat belt. Very lucky that it came down on the rear quarter and not the front.

A word of advice to all: DO NOT use a 5-point belt if you don't have a roll bar/cage ... just imagine yourself in my car, with a full harness. A full cage and 5-point belts were going in this winter ... on my next car, they will be the FIRST thing to get done!

Here's the pics of the aftermath:

First off I'm glad you are okay. About the harness belt without a roll cage that is the same thing I heard other people say. You are better off with the stock belt if you don't have a roll cage as the harness will keep you up and the roof can collapse on you. I still is a little controversial amongs weekend racers, but I tend to agree with you and others about needing a roll cage with the harness.

On an off topic, what color was your Bimmer? It looks like the same as my old E36 which was Montreal Blue.

wow...

I am glad you are alright....please make sure to check yourself out as well to make sure you did not have any internal injuries.

Again, thanks for making it out alive....I agree, roll cage for sure with 5 point....that could have been worse.

Will your insurance cover the loss? I know that SCCA makes you sign a waiver....I never expect to crash, so I always wondered how they will look at that?

Thanks guys ... I am definitly very lucky. I don't think I'll be buying any lottery tix any time soon, since I probably used up all my luck for the year!

I usually hit about 150kph on the front straight (about 100mph) ... the trun is a pretty wide righthand sweeper. I went wide, and the car was understeering big time. Got into the marbles on the outside (debris and rubber chuncks) ... once you hit those, basically there is no grip, and the car just slid right off the track. I was probably going about 60mph when I hit the wall, since by that time I went through some grass, and had both feet in.

There are a couple more events this year, so I might just do that, if I ever get it back from the paint shop

I'm looking for another e36 shell to transplant the engine into right now ... This will be the big winter project, and believe me ... the cage goes in FIRST!

Maurits blau (sp?). It's a bit darker than the Avus blue. It WAS pretty nice

Thanks Leon. No insurance on the track, and I would not claim it anyway ... way too much hassle. It was a track car, so I was prepared for a write-off, but it still does suck royally!
