It is usually offered in major cities with one plan option.
Last year, I stopped using that carrier, since I have a digital phone from work that I use for free.
I can still use my OEM analog car phone to dial 911, and if I use a credit card. The phone works great, and the sound quality/signal strength is excellent. It works in areas that my digital phone doesn't.
Cingular offers nationwide plans that give you digital and analog. That will work and give you great coverage! I though about doing it, but descided I loved the space in my armrest too much.

im trying to do a retro fit of something similar to it...i really would like to have it in my Legend. my LS is fully loaded (as much as a 91 can be) im not sure if in 1991 the Carphone was offered but i have the CD changer, the air bag and Bose, the climate control alllllll the goodies....onlything missing is the phone...im trying to retrofit for that bit of Nostalgic Appeal.

I have an old portfolio phone...on eof those carphone looking things that looked like it came in a book case. I was in the process of trying to install that, but i think if i can just get the retrofit Acura phone, it would be better.

that and the cingular being able to read analog and digital would be great and cheap.

I am pretty sure you will have the mic and speakers built in. I would use the Acura phone since it is ment to plug into those and the button on the steering wheel. Btw, for the oem phone you have to upgrade your cruise control buttons to the ones that have the extra button for the phone. Enjoy!

The Mode button for the phone is actually on the volume control button side, not the cruise.
The mic is next to the overhead map lights. The speaker is mounted under the glovebox against the firewall.

James will post the pics I sent to him today, sorry for the delay.

Thanks for hosting those, James!
The pic with the button is the Mode switch, to the left of the steering wheel behind the volume controls.
If you need more pics or have any other questions about the functionality of the phone, let me know. I have the owner's manual of the phone as well.

I installed a bluetooth car kit in my Lexus...it works with any Bluetooth Capable handset....sound is impeccable. Makes use of the phones I use sooo much easier.

And to Chris' point, the E911 law makes it a requirement for the phone to be able to reach the police for an emergency.

Analog (if offered) will be very costly since the technology is about as rampant as 8 track tapes ...therefore more $$$

wow....that's crazy! i would have to find a RACK of stuff!!!

Im Still really interested...i think if i ever ran across a Phone eqipped Legend that was wrecked or whatever i would have to see about getting all the wiring and stuff out of it.

Because contrary to popular beliefe, this wasn't a often picked option...those who have it should keep it! i want it

I've seen OEM kits on eBay before, and they were fairly cheap.
I thought that the wiring was already there for the phone. If you look in your trunk near the CD changer, the plugs for the transceiver should be there somewhere under the carpet.
I also think that there is another module of some kind behind the middle of the back seat for the phone.

Yeah, that's there, i have seen that a while ago when i had to remove all the carpeting from my trunk. However, the whole thing with Phone speaker and the wiring for the speaker and the buttons on the wheel. Looks daunting...i want it though.

It would be ideal to find the installation manual of the OEM phone kit. I looked through the manuals I have (Acura Legend Cellular Telephone Owner's Manual, Programming Guide, and Quick Reference card), but it only covers the operation/functions of the unit.

Does anyone have the installation manual for the whole system?

I'm thinking the only other additional items that need to be installed is the microphone (and the wiring for it along the headliner), speaker and wiring that goes from under the glove box to the main control unit, replace the volume control switch on the steering wheel which includes the Mode button (not sure where to find the wire for that). Since the stereo mutes when a call comes in or when you place a call, there must be a wire that connects to the headunit harness from the telephone handset or main control unit which is behind the back seat. Other than that, the rest of the wiring is there for the antenna and tranciever.

That's the one I have. That kit should include everything needed to have a fully functional phone.

I have a 91 LS Coupe and it came with the phone!! I feel special now. All the ladies get impressed when they see it for the first time. Imma look into getting it activated so I can tell peeps, "Hit me on my car phone", lol. Take that all you guys with your fancy rims and expensive sound systems! I may be stock up the butt, but I got a phone!!! lol, j/k. I think the phone adds like 10hp, lmao!!
