Yes the owner of this car had to chime in.

This is a 1998 that was manufactured in Mexico and legally imported into the USA. This makes it the only 1998 Bug of its type in the USA! Yes, that is the same year the new bug was introduced to the USA.

I feel like a dunce for not recalling it sooner...

It's a Volvo P1800...one of those old boy joints. I feel silly. The guy next to PSA's shop has 3 of them in the parking lot. one a glassback.

This isn't the same car as the "Final Edition" ones they made that were having trouble with emissions inspections right?

Easy. Sterling 827SLi, right? I'm guessing by the liftback. In the UK it was called the Rover 800-series, with the latter two numbers denoting engine displacement... ie; Rover 825/827... I believe there was also an 820.

The car's pretty much on the same chassis and running gear as the G1. I've spotted a few in junkyards, but have only seen one on the roads locally. It'd be an interesting car to get a hold of if I ever find one.

Edit: I'll take a probably completely wrong guess at the car in the picture, as well. It really looks like an early-spec Toyota Soarer... the one with the 1JZGTE engine. However, I do see the Rover badge on it. Beyond that, I dunno.
