Local Calling Area?
Long story short, our house phone got cut off and we didnt have the money to pay off the bill in full yet, and needed a house phone, so we started service with some other small company and since its been cut on, we can't dial certain numbers. The contract says that there is no long distance calling (which we havent been doing) yet we cant call some numbers within the same area code, and some numbers that are in the area that have a different area code (my town is split up into 973 and 908 area codes).
Now, we are in the 973 area code, and we can dial my cell and my dads cell (both 973) with no problems. We can dial local house numbers, like my aunt who lives upstairs (973), cant call a number from the town next to us a few blocks away (Irvington, still 973), and my roommate cant even call his mom who lives a few blocks away in the SAME town, but is just a 908 area code o_o. Now still within the 973 area code, ive noticed that the only exchanges that ive been able to get through to are 923 (same exchange as this house phone), 477 which is dads cell, 868 which is my cell, and 741 which is the access number for my 56k connection. The only exchanges that ive tried to call and couldnt connect to were 223, 371, and one more that i cant remember off the top of my head (400 something). What i want to know is what exactly a "local calling area" consists of. Does each individual carrier determine what numbers are considered local in the area and what numbers arent (since i can see that its not just based on area code alone)?
