As far as my connections with getting Mike here --

I just talked to the Pass Bureau here at US Airways. I cannot offer Mike a discounted positive space ticket; those are available only to the individuals I have specified on my flight benefits when I enrolled (currently, my parents). I do, however, have Guest Passes for standby travel that are valid internationally. Currently US Airways serves Frankfurt to PHL and CLT, and Munich to PHL. There is an inherent risk with any standby travel and I don't have a very high seniority with the airline yet, so that is something to consider.

Also, I have learned that this year there was an embargo placed on international Guest Pass travel (which was subsequently lifted) but the Pass Bureau folks are not sure how things will play out in 2008. At best, I won't know until early-mid spring if Mike would be able to use a Guest Pass at all. Best case scenario, the flights look empty, the embargo is lifted, and we're able to get him here on one of those.

The fare would run $100 each way plus taxes & fees, to get him to Charlotte or Philly. Any travel he needed to do beyond that would require an additional Guest Pass to get him to ATL or CHA, but domestically they are quite a bit cheaper, e.g. $25 + taxes one way from CLT-ATL.

I am still keeping my eyes peeled for additional deals outside the realm of Guest Pass travel, and I hope you all will too.

If we could find a more solid way to get him in the USA would we be able to use your Guest Pass for a domestic flight?

Am I correct that Frankfurt and Munich are the best airports for MikeD?

Absolutely. Those will be available regardless of embargo status. Still no guarantees -- and flying standby is always risky business -- but it's an option to get him from point A to point B within the states.

I'm not sure; we'll need to touch base with Mike for that information. I only included information about those two because they are the only airports served in Germany by the airline that I work for.

I just checked some average prices to get an idea on the cost. It looks like the average fare is $1,150-$1,500 round trip. My friend is going to get back with me on what her travel agency can do. We just need MikeD's departure airport. Does anyone remember which airport he used in 2004?

Lee, based on a search I did, it appears that he may have flown from DUS (Düsseldorf) which is 20 miles from Cologne.

What was the verdict on Joeman's ability to help with airfare this time around?

I'm exceptionally impressed by the guyz on this thread. I read all the pages, just to see if someone was gonna try to kill your plans or say something negative. Nothing! Please IM after Christmas, I want to put a lil sumthin sumthin on MIKED's fund. I'm not sure if I'll be able to attend (no ac currently), but I have a feeling that attending NALM is more meaningful to him than me.

Thanks! I'll be sure and give you a nudge in January.

BTW, no Ac required for attendance. I was car-less in Vegas this year. I had to mooch rides from/to the airport and slum it in Tyson's coupe all weekend

An airplane tire fell on him. He is now on disability.
