I was going to wait until I had some better pics, but I'll go ahead and post one. This is my latest acquisition, Springfield M1 Garand circa 1953. Picked it up at a gun show last weekend. I've always liked old rifles, kinda nice to own a piece of history. I'd like to pick up another Garand sometime from the WWII era. This one was issued during the Korean War. ![]() |

Gun thread is good. Any reloaders? For those who don't reload and have been shocked by the high price of ammo lately, reloading is the way to keep shooting. Casting your own bullets for rifles and pistols that can function at lower pressures will extend your savings. Glock owners need a barrel swap for shooting cast. Being a diehard tightwad shooter, I will scrounge brass, range lead and whatever else to keep shooting. Once you get past the brass and the lead, powder and primers are cheap. That box of 50 .45's you paid 28.50 for just cost you less than 5.00 by reloading your self. .223 has gotten absolutley ridiculous. Last summer .223 bullets were $58 per thousand and now $144 for the same. And this is not LOADED ammo, components only. The loaded stuff has gone from 2.00/box for a box of 20 to almost 12.00. This is for the cheap reloadable kind. The steel case crap can still be bought for under 6.00 box. Scrap lead has gone through the roof along with copper which has driven the cost of bullets and primers to a all time high. A 25lb bag of shot has gone from $18 to $47 in the last 8 months but powder prices have been pretty much stable. There really hasn't been a big increase. Where you really see is the jump in price is on bullets, shot, and primers. Shotshell wads have also been affected some but mainely due to the rise in petroleum costs. Anyone wanting to try their hand a reloading can do so inexpensively and for most, the equipment will pay for itself in a very short time. If anyone has any questions about reloading feel free to ask.
In a side bar note. The gun grabbers could not have planned a market like we are seeing right now but I will bet they are extremely happy about it. Hopefully things will stabilize and we will see ammo prices come down a bit as the war in Iraq scales back. Dedicated shooters will cling to their sport no matter the cost. Like a Legend owner. Those who can't tolerate the high cost will no doubt sell out and do something else like golf or tennis. Of which neither sport is that great for self defense. BTW Favorite Toys - Kimber Custom Combat Royale, Rock River Arms LAR-15 A4 HBAR NM, 1903-A3 Springfield, M1 Garand. |

Nice pics of your pieces
It sucks to hear ammo has gone up so much, it's been years since I needed to buy and I'm soon in the need for pistol ammo especially. Not looking forward to the price shock you are describing, hopefully I can find a show and buy some factory reloads for practice shooting.
