My first guns were a matched set of .22 derringers I received as an 18th birthday gift. Perfectly legal. I've only shot them once, but I'll never give those suckers up. However, check your laws again... you might be pleasantly surprised.

Yay! I got a cookie. Hehe. I wish I knew the story behind my SMLE, my first rifle... I'd get pics but it's locked up in the safe right now. However, this is what I know.
I was wanting a WW1/WW2-era surplus rifle, specifically a Kar98. Couldn't find one, but ended up stopping into a gun shop here in town that specialized in older surplus firearms. Found this slightly beat up No. 1 Mk3* Enfield that dated back to 1918 and picked it up... only $120 so I took it home. It had a problem with the safety catch(the recoil would flip the catch back on every time I fired it) so I took it back to the shop... one of my high school buddies was working there. I opened the case and got a strange look on his face. He had sold the piece to the shop and I ended up buying it... he regretted selling it, though. Still have it sitting proudly in the safe. With the handloads I have it groups very decently for a 90 year-old rifle with iron sights. I'm still impressed.

I know this is going back a few pages, but I have to disagree, as a security officer who has had to discharge his weapon more then once I can say in a high tension situation for fast low light target acquisition a laser is definitely a very useful tool, I have a Beretta 9mm (Service Weapon for many years) and am soon to acquire a Sprinfield XD .45 Tactical, The XD has tritium(sp?) night sights which I have also found extremely handy, though not as effective as the laser when your suspect is in a low light area (course here comes the argument for tac lights)

Sounds like you should take the police examination and become an actual cop. It's pretty common for guns to come with tritium these days. Why do you want the XD tactical? Why not get a USP tactical?
You're not a swat member that is infiltrating the premises of a criminal holding hostages. I can't imagine you could have any use for something more than a light...or perhaps you should call the police. And once again, you should known where you're aiming. If you can see the person you're aiming your weapon at, then you should be able to aim at them without the use of a laser pointer. |

My new-to-me Winchester Model 94 rifle got here yesterday! It was my soon-to-be father in law's. Gave it to me outright one day, had to wait for a car trip (rather than a plane trip) to actually bring it home. Anyway, I started researching it a bit, from the SN I found out it was made in 1952. It's been in a case in a closet for over 35 years, his wife and kids didn't even know he had it. I looked on gunbroker.com and found a similar condition, same year model going for $750
I had spoken to a guy at Gander about what sort of scope mount I could use with the vertical cartridge ejection, and he told me he would not encourage me to drill or tap a "true" pre-'64 model 94. I didn't believe him that it would be worth all that much right now (before I found the $750 twin on auction), but he said in 10 years a non-drilled version's value would skyrocket. I'm still going to hunt with the bitch, but I won't be adding any optics to it. I'll just have to get a horse and a revolver, since I'll look like a cowboy carrying that thing around ![]() Pics to come later (want to shine her up good first) |

You don't need to drill and tap a Model 94...because of the top eject, the scope mount is attached to the left side of the receiver using existing screw sites. Scope mounts on the Model 94 are not very sturdy because the scope is cantilevered over the top of the receiver. The other downside is the reduced clearance over the ejection port. If you experience a jam..the scope mount makes it a pain in the ass to clear. My advice is to leave the scope off. The model 94 is a great brush gun as is and you will find the fixed sights are quicker than a scope and you won't have to worry about knocking a scope out of adjustment. Believe me 94 scope mounts are flimsy and the mount looks out of place. What is likely to happen if you decide to go ahead and mount a scope is that you will booger up the screw heads trying to remove them from a 50yr old rifle that has probably never been messed with. You stand a chance of doing more damage with a screw driver that you will benefit. If you must have a scope and want a lever action, buy a Marlin 336C. Marlins are drilled and tapped from the factory for a scope plus the Marlin is side eject..no worries. By the way...what caliber? Hope this helps |

^ Thanks for the advice. It's going to live out the rest of its days sans-scope. It's a 30-30. Need to pick up a cleaning rod for it (my .50 cal rod doesn't fit, imagine that
) this afternoon, then I'll take it out to the range tonight for a sight check after a good cleaning. Pics are in the camera now, will upload them tonight when I find the connector cable. |
