HHmmmm...clay?? LOL j/k Thats a tough one but you could cut and sand a nice piece of wood(or pieces) and then stain and laquer them to match or paint them black. You might get some woodgrain showing through if you go black so I'd put a light coat of bondo over the wood and then sand back down to fill the grain, then primer and black paint. I used to build custom cabinets so wood would be my first thought.

Something to hold others over till I do a DIY on the Car PC
Afew people asked what they would need so I am posting a reply here as well

Mother board and chip
(Pentium III, equivilant or better)

Video card (NVIDA ability to override display settings)
you will need to go down to 400x300 most cards only go down to 640x400

Hard drive
(wouldn't get less than 10 gig widows uses 1.5 alone)

Sound Card anything more than $30.00 will do

Memory (512 ddr) of course the more the better

Display panel of some kind I like the 7" TFT LCD with a 16:9 ratio

CPU Fan if your processor doesn't come with one

DVD drive any brand(for loading software and nice to have for adding 4gig of MP3's)

USB card (option if mother board has 2 usb outlets

Cirque touchpad

An extenion cable for your touch pad (about 4 ft) you have to make the wire run to the trunk

1/8 headphone to RCA adapter (to run Line out from sound card to the amp)

8 foot Video RCA cable or S-video if you get a display screen that can run S-video, would be better anyway.

300 watt PC Power supply

300 watt DC/AC converter for the computer

momentary switch to locate in the dash to turn on the PC

You will need to wire the switch for the DC/AC converter in the dash as well so you will need some 12 to 14 gauge power wire

you will need to have the use of a keyboard
(no need to buy one for the car if you own one)

this should get you a good start let me know (via PM) when your ready to jump into it and have these items.

Found a sense of direction

Thanks for the suggestion ssilk12001 but I think I am going to go with one woman's knee high leather boot, a piece of linolium, a piece of plastic and some super strong glue (not super glue though) in theory I think it will work out well.

I know exactly what you mean, I was sick of mine. Useless during the day, took too long to load, and had all the annoyances of a computer, mixed with all the annoyances of a car

One boot, a piece of plastic, and some DIY =Pic Update :) 56k :(

Ok so maybe a few of you thought I was kidding when I said I was going to use linolium some plastic a leather boot and some strong glue, oh no

and here you go . . . I am sure that I am not completely satisfied but I am more happy than I was when I was staring at that hole in my console. Oh yeah yes the car is very dirty right now, but who has time to clean when you're DIYing.
Sorry for the blurriness in some of the shots came out better without the flash, and I wasnt about to break out the tripod.

Linolium tile =great template (easy to cut but bad idea for asthetics!)

This shot is somewhat similar to what I would see in the day the display sits back a bit ( I think it helps block some light?)
Screens a little dirty too couldn't tell until I took pics
( I need a camera phone)

Much Thanks and props to whom evers picture this was ( I hope you don't mind)

Ahh the beauty of Winamp, a superwide variety of decks and a 250 band EQ

This has nothing to do with the Car computer but the heat shield was another good DIY investment, I notice a substantial difference on the left side from the right side. it is puffed up a bit like a stuffed pillow so when the hood is down it blocks the heat from the engine bay ( there is also shielding under the short ram total cost about $15.00) Metal was scrap from a computer case and material can be bought at a hardware store. And yes I know get a better filter. Hope you liked the update

Ahh Lou I am sure you could if you wanted it looked harder than it was, the hardest part was just figuring out how to do it, but tuning a car, that's a talent I am yet to master

Nismo let me know when your ready and we can get together and hook it up

Big thanks to both of you guys as it's responses like these that I make my motivation when I get like this and am on the verge of saying is this really worth it

Chris Dog thanks, sorry to hear about the complications you had with yours, I figure it's like anything else that is desired but out of the norm, such as the Legend itself, complications are sure to come but overcoming these issues coupled with sharing and enjoying your experiences along the way cause many, myself included, to realize it is the path that is enjoyed as much as the desire to reach an end, which is why so many people never stop doing what they love regardless of the challenges. I really say this for myself for the most part because it is this that I must remember but hey why not share it.

Not really a noob question, but sure all you need is a Tuner card, you can even add a TV card and get local channels, or navigation, the options are quite endless. I plan to add a Tuner card and a portable DVD player to stick somewhere, another couple nice things which was the initial goal one it is fully upgradable as technology advances and the pocket book affords and two in local hot spots I can even access the internet. I would also like to add (soon) USB port under the ash tray for transferability of music, pictures and movies.
