Springs and shocks, When to replace?

I'm not sure, but is there any certain time when you replace the shocks and springs? As of now I have close to 170K and the car seems to drive fine, no excessice bouncing after hitting bumps or anything like that. I'm sure the stock ones aren't as stiff as they used to be, any input?

thanks,
-nick-

I went through the same thing with my G1. I finally changed all four corners at about 210k miles because I had bought the parts years before and got tired of them being in the way. I noticed a slight improvement, but not a tremendous amount....

Ok simple just drive your car in a bumby road if you car start to bumb alot and make some noise then Its the time to replace them or you can check leaking on the shock. The best place to test it is in NYC FDR drive you drive at 60-70mph during a curve then I bet some how you will hit a bumb your car shouldn't be throw to the right if you take the left lane. My bro did change his rear shock and change all of the rear sway bar bushing. The car handle soilid now he need to replace the front one also.

I've got 111,XXX miles on the original suspension. Aside from an occasional knock from the rear passenger side they're golden.

You replace a strut after determining that it is leaking/seeping. It will continue to lose fluid until it no longer functions. Symptoms include excessive jounce (up/down movement of front sheetmetal when pressure applied) or uneven tire wear. As a rule-of-thumb, OEM struts typically last between 100 - 150,000 miles depending upon driving conditions. There are of course, exceptions.

As to springs, although they tend to sag minimally over time, you can usually reuse unless you have been habitually been hauling next to max cargo capacity which will tend to increase the amt. of sag over time.
In over 30 yrs of driving, I have only had to deal with a spring once -- a front coil broke, and this was on a GM car.

from your description, you dont need shocks. Is probably a smaller, cheaper part(S) thats dried up, broken or cracked under the car. The weight of the car man, Legends are FAT !

Honda uses good shocks.
For many Toyota I owned, the shocks lasted for 3-4 years.
Don't who make shock/shuts for Honda... they last forever!!!

BTW, you might noticed the rear is a bit lower then the front (measure from the ground). That means the rear coils are sagging and getting weak. Some people replaced them because of that. My 91 couple tail is a bit lower than the front now, but I am not replacing them if the shock are still good.
