The Horizontals play LIVE!
I have a bunch of friends in this band called the Horizontals. They're pretty talented and the lead guitar player can really shred on the solos. Any who, I make a point of filming video at these kinds of gigs whenever my friends are involved. I had been taking a lot of "B reel" for the concert and I was really amped to take some great video. Unfortunately, this concert was in an empty strip mall store that didn't have a raised stage and I couldn't see squat from the back which is the only place you can film from and still have the audio sound half decent. A couple songs into their set, I got tired of holding the camera above my head to just barely be able to see the band's heads so I pocked my camcorder and moved to the front and grabbed the dSLR off my friend who I had taking pictures for me.
I'm glad I put down the camcorder because taking pictures turned out to be a blast. A few days ago I set my camera to take pictures in RAW so that whatever I took pictures of next, I would force myself to run all my photos through photoshop before they were JPEGs. It was a long process with over a hundred photos but it was very rewarding. I boosted the contrast on a lot of these and I toyed with vibrancy and tone to make the magenta light that was on the stage look more natural and less... magenta. Enough novel, the photos: ![]() He looks like hes about to explode here: ![]() Note the weezer style "H" for Horizontals in the background: ![]() ![]() I know this is blurry but for some reason I like the way it turned out. If you note the "H" in the background, you'll realize its the guitarist going wild, not me. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I took all of these at ISO800, F/1.8 and most of these at 1/20th of a second shutter. Shooting in 3 shot bursts weeded out the shots that came out too blurry and made all the strumming blurs work out very well. Comments welcome.

i like them the blurriness really shows movement, if you would have used a faster shutter speed it wouldn't have conveyed the energy as well. I agree with wyatt that you do need to take more pics of the group as a unit though. some great work regardless!

if i were the band, and hired you to shoot the event, i would be let down.
i mean that in the most constructive way. You just need to have wider shots, think about it, they want to have pictures of their group playing so they can remember it, not pictures of guitars and pedals. Dont take any of that wrong, just trying to help you out in the future. And yes, i saw a couple of the Facebook pictures you posted. Why didnt you post those here? |

I agree with you that a few more wide angle shots would have done me good but I have good reason for not taking any. The stage was not raised and the crowd blocked the band. I didn't bother bring my 18-55mm lens because I know F/3.5 at these places wouldn't work because they're like dungeons. Which photos do you like on facebook that I didn't put here? I have around 60 in all and I just picked the ones I liked best.
Let me have it because I get another go at a better venue in march since they placed first in this BOTB.

these are cool, you should explore these. Remember, Rule of Thirds and composition. i found when shooting groups, its alot easier and makes the picture seem filled out symetrically.
![]() Dont be afraid of the flash. Adjust the shutter speed accordingly, and remember, almost anything can be fixed in PS. ![]() ![]() ![]() this ones nice, good angle ![]() ![]() those were all great shots. you should retouch those |

On facebook, all but the first 23 were touched up because they were shot in RAW. My friend shot the first 23 with the camera's auto settings. I gave him a quick 30 second brief on rule of thirds using the tic-tac-toe analogy and he did pretty well with I think. Theres nothing I hate more than a perfectly centered shot... using a flash comes close though.
None the less, I did play with a little. The last photo in the album on facebook has a shot with the flash with three of the band members. It didn't work out because F/8 wasn't enough to put everyone in focus but in photoshop I was able to restore most of the color and vibrance that was lost with the pure white of the flash. I guess theres hope, but I'd still only use it in a bind... and using a 50mm lens in low light from a meter away trying to get three people in focus qualifies as a bind. As far as what photos I included here, I just figured you'd be more interested in some of the more artistic shots.
