Lightning Blunders

A storm passed through last night so I setup in the driveway with my tripod and tinkered with difference settings. I kept taking pictures till it started to rain but even so, these are remarkably underwhelming.

I first tried a 15 second shutter and failed miserably. I then brought it down to about a 1/2 second shutter and had the camera shoot continuously. It left a mess of bad shots to clean up on the memory card, but this was the only way I got any half decent shots(if you can even say they're that good).

I suppose I learned a lot though... that is, I know several ways I shouldn't do this in the future.

Out of around 150 shots taken, I kept 18 and shared 4, only two of which actually had lightning really. Pathetic.

I think OEM is the best look. I just don't happen to think any of the various arrangements of OEM got it exactly right all at once

How long do you usually hold the shutter? Do you wait till you get a bunch of lightning then release? Is it always more than 5 seconds or less than 20 or something?

at full night i leave it open for about 2 to 3 minutes or until a lot of lighting has gone off. at dusk time it is harder because it gets bright to fast so i usually leave it open for only a few seconds at a time, I have some pics of this technique i will upload into this thread to show you tomorrow.

heres some shots i took a couple of days ago i opened the shutter for about 10 to 15 seconds. these would have been great if the damn powerlines hadn't been in the way, oh well live and learn i guess. this technique is good at dusk time, but you can use the 2 to 3 minutes one at full dark. just practice on opening the shutter at different intervals till you find one you like.

shooting lighting at dusk offers its own challenges, thats why i only did this once. I am sure with more practice i could master it but i love to just leave the shutter open and catch as much as possible then closing it when i think it's been enough. I am glad your so interested in this type of photography, it's kind of one of the reasons i wanted a dslr so i could do this.

It was your first light painting thread that put me over the top on buying a dSLR. The massive improvement in picture quality aside, theres so much more you can do with a dSLR camera. If you remember my pictures with my old camera, I had a bit of an obsession with low lighting though my S500 wasn't suited for it. My buddy was showing me how to do cool push/pull effects the other day and when I get home and download my pictures, I'll have a few cool ones with my car.

Anyway, I'll keep playing with things. A big issue with the pictures in the OP was they were just cloud to cloud and weren't very intense at all. Hopefully I'll be able to catch a more intense storm.

I am glad i inspired you, these dslr are great for low light pictures. I have a friend with a d40x and he's almost got me talked into a external flash with some gels, i was looking through some of his stuff and he gets very creative with that flash. heres a link to his flickr account check some of his stuff out http://www.flickr.com/photos/colbyjoe/
hopefully you'll catch a good storm soon so you'll get some more practice in once you get that first great shot in you'll be hooked lol.
