Still Photography I

My weapon:

I like the way I got the backgrounds to be washed out. The camera itself is so old I can't even make certain what year its from. Its late 70s my father says.

All about the focus and the aperature for the washed out backround effect. Cool shots nonetheless. What did you use to take the pics? Macro lens?

Nah, I'm cheap as hell. I had my 18-55mm lens at 55mm and I had the camera at the minimum focal length of 0.9ft. Only draw back is you need longer shutters or high ISO.

I never use the flash. I'll go up to ISO800 and start holding my breath before I use the flash. When I'm with my friends I sometimes run out of options and use the flash. Not so bad for capturing memories but it feels like all the art is gone from the shots.

I have taken one good shot with the flash though. There is hope(just not much):

Glad to see someone else keepin it real with old school ways.

Even though I shoot about half of my client work in digital, I picked this up a few years ago and have been loving it. (note: the one in the photo isn't mine, just not feeling up to digging mine out of the Pelican at the moment)

Do you use the on camera light meter, guesstimate it, or use a separate light meter?

I haven't actually used it for class yet but I'm going to use the archaic 3 LED light system in the viewer. Are you saying its unreliable?

The on camera metering can be pretty good depending on the camera and manufacturer. If memory serves me correctly, Nikons were known for their spot metering (and later on for their matrix metering.) For most situations and films you have enough latitude to be over/under a few stops. For the more critical assignments, definately use a good external meter. I have been very happy with a Sekonic 308 bII.

But I'd say you've got what 70% of all "photographers" lack, and that's an eye for composition.

Its all a learning experience. After my first roll I'll have a good idea of how accurate the meter is. I'm already familiar with what fools the meter in my dSLR so hopefully I won't have any trouble. And thanks! I've learned everything I know thus far from the photographers on this forum.

my friend wait till you see what an off camera flash can do! I just got my setup running only cost me about 150 bones but it is so worth it. the most bang for your buck. I am still learning how to use it, some of my pics in my Prescott thread i used the off camera flash. you can get some very creative shots using this system.

I don't have that kind of money to throw around. I have done some trick shots with a couple second shutter and a detached flash from my dad's old SLR. Its pretty cool. I'm actually gonna put something together on here when I get a buddy to help me.

Had photography 1 again today. Its taking for god damn ever to get to developing film. I finally got all the materials I need and I'm about half way through a 36 exposure roll of B/W film. A side note, taking an hour to develop film FTL! My rebel does it instantly!

Speaking of developing film.... if you or anyone is interested, I have an enlarger and development materials (no chemicals) that I'm willing to offer to a photog student free, just pay shipping.

I was going to convert my third bathroom to a dark room and realized I'll never get around to it. So just pm or email me and I'll set you up.

(Camera not included.)

oh you already have the flash thats the most expensive part, all you need to get is a $28 hotshoe radio slave off ebay. the flash i got is really old its a nikon sb-25. as long as you can set the intensity of the flash your gold!
