Soooo, my motorized OEM antennae has been making the usual grinding sounds for a while and finally decided to quit altogether. Yes, the choices to address the issue are...(test time)
(a) new mast from mastsrus.com or comparable vendor
(b) shave the sucker and f'get radio reception
(c) hook up the auxiliary rear window antennae and go about my business,
(d) S2000 mast FTW
(e) none of the above.
I chose (e). After a nice chat with Scott (killer reconditioned '91 sedan) at the last Chicago meet, I was clued into Hirschmann antennas (the supplier for MB). I found a vendor (can't remember who right now), got the replacement unit, and put it in this past weekend. Works like a charm and almost NO sound with extension and retraction. Do not hear it. Better than new Legend (hey, I know ... I'm original owner
). Here's a side-by-side shot of the two. Soldered the OEM connector onto the new unit and heat shrinked it. Had to do a little creative engineering on the bottom mount, reusing the shock mounting from the old one. Sorry, didn't take shot of it mounted as its boring and doesn't look different.
Gratuitous recent shot of the sedan after a bath ... still need to install my JDMs, Alex! :hide:.
