The recommended ATF change is evey 24 months or 30,000 miles. If you drive your car around the city much I can tell you that is pushing it. By that time the ATF is very dirty and you can bet the wear and buildup on the solenoids is there.
The ATF service calls for one drain and refill not the 3X.
I left my Legend with my sis for a couple years when I was away. When I came back, the tranny fluid was dirty as hell - and I had used Castrol Syntec ATF. Then I did one drain and refill. Within one week, it was dirty again - I thought that I was burning the fluid up!. The leftover fluid was so dirty that the fluid was still dirty. Then I tried Honda ATFZ1 ATF - immediate shift improvement.
I think the ATF should be drained and refilled once a year at least for most drivers. If all you're oing is highway miles the honda schedule is OK. If you're racing now and then and pushing it - change it more often.
The same goes for lifter noise. I have always used 5W-30 and changed 3 mos or 4,000 miles. At one point I was using synthetic until my seals started leaking. They're fixed now so I might go back to synthetic. But frequent oil changes will help prevent lifters from wearing. I suspect that it is not really wear but the precise oil passages are getting plugged up from buildup. Especially if the car is used in cold weather.
I have always had the opinion that Hondas need more maintenance or care than Toyotas and Nissans, the trouble is that most people who initially owned these Legends did not look after them properly. If they did, they could last a long time - they're precision engineered but they need to be looked after well.
Just like a nice babe!
