Straight pipe mod.

WOW I must crazy then because my car has straight piped for like a year. My cat was all rusted and had huge hole in it so we just cut it out and straight piped it.

, sounds great also. I have a question , is that the catalytic converter you applied the straight pipe mod to? sorry for sounding so newb, its because i am. Right now my catalytic converter has a big hole in the bottom of it, u can see right through it when you look under the car. I am going to have to get a new one, and hopefully tahts the only thing wrong down there. But anyway, if that is the cat converter that you applied that mod to, i will most likley buy one from you

. Also, does anyone know how much normal service charges are to remove old cat converter and install new one? thanks in advance

First time I heard of an injected vehicle, set up to have the restriction of a cat, work better without a cat, at all. Must be because its so old. If you straight pipe most of the vehicles today, they wouldn't run for crap and they would get terrible gas milage.

acc-unit: haha thanks yeah it sounds sweet. yeah its the catalytic converter. if your coverter has a huge hole in it your car would be almost undrivable. there would be exhaust in the car and it would SUPER loud lol

daLegend: not really true daLegend, MOST cars today if you straight pipe them get better milage and increased tq and hp.

I heard that adding a straight pipe to the Legend decreases Hp. Anyone done real dyno testing on this?

lol it doesnt decrease hp, way I see it before I installed this I could actually do a 2.5k dump in 1st and it would hook up at about 10-15 now its completely useless if I dump 1st, just spins constantly lol

also think of it this way: get more air into/out of the engine and you make more horsepower. simple as that.

It can decrease HP at most RPM actually. I bet you're probably missing some low-end power now. Of course you won't notice because all you pay attention to is the increased noise and upper-end. Very few modifications you do to a car actually create power. Most mods just shift it around your powerband.

lol, im not lieing, the cat converter has a huge hole in it, and when the hole wasnt as big it sounded like i had a custom excaust system in my car, but now the hole is bigger and it sounds like rice/**** lol . And it is drivable, just a huge loss in hp since the exaust is just comming out of the cat converter and there is no pressure in the exaust. Anyone know how much it would cost for a place to take out my old cat converter and install a new one ?

exhaust is a tricky subject as its not just as simple as :

put a big ass pipe, gut the cat to get the air out faster.

That WILL decrease power output or make it unusable power.

The trick is the Velocity of the Exhaust Gasses and Backpressure. To achive this you need to custom tune the flow of exhaust gases just right to get the right ammount of back pressure and air velocity.

With my expierence in the paste with Streight Pipe mods is, yes they do well on the high end (highway redline) But you loose a huge ammount of Torque. This is not what you want in a 3200lbs car, whats the result? A car that finally picks up in the higher rpm range and is a dog 0-40 (important stage of racing) So in other words you now turned your legend into a civic! haha

Now since you do happen to have a muffler still on this helps since its creating backpressure.

The other funny thing about streight piping is the noise and feel of power, but when I had it, me and my friend would race all the time, before I did the mod I would leave him after 2nd gear and pull over 5 cars to 3rd gear. After the MOD he had me in 2nd gear and I finally pulled away from him when I hit 4th!

Proof that this mod isnt allways a good thing, this proves a loss of Torque is not a price to pay for more top end.

Steveman- I agree.
At one time i had a full straight pipe instead of a cat...NOT WORTH IT! My legend would just about roll over and die until the tach hit about about four grand.. The original cat was, however, clogged(>180K miles) so I split the difference witha performance cat.
Still passes inspection.
Less restrictive than stock, but still enough backpressure to keep low end torque....

Performance aftermarket cat converter: $98
Professional installation at local shop: $31

first of all AndaHeart you shouldnt come on here and start bashing people, I do not appreciate it.
second of all steveman you must not have done the right size piping...I lost no low end torque 0-40 is amazingly fast as well as 40-140 so I dont know if you had the wrong size piping or what but mine doesnt lose any TQ... if anything it INCREASED torque

admin: delete my post (this one) as well as the 2 above it by steveman & AndaHeart... I do not want to turn this thread into ANOTHER bashing thread... were all here to improve our legends, not bash others for what they have done to theres.

another thing I like how this newbie posts and bashes me then no one stands up for me....makes me wanna :vomit:

i agree. replacing the cat with 2" piping wont lose a lot of tq at all, if any! sure your tq will be hurt if you put like a 2.5" piping... you lose tons of back pressure, but 2 1/4 wont hurt your tq (turbo viper can prove it because he obviously has done this mod and said that it doesnt hurt tq and he gained a lot of top end).

I used 1 7/8'' I.D. Piping..... this is why I DID NOT lose torque

note: stock I.D. Piping is 1 7/8''

That might be the most ridiculus thing i have ever heard, Turboviper. I was not bashing you in any way. Its too bad that you took the comment personally.

Again, I agree with steveman...this forum has become abit useless as of late. Evidently you are not allowed to question users with a large number of posts.

And I'm absolutely sure that you dyno'ed the motor/chasis before and after the mod.(or you had a newton force meter installed). And shifted exactly the same way each test run.
And were not influenced at all by the increased noise the mod caused.

Im merely trying to disect these modifications in a scientific manner, as most are not easy, nor are they inexpensive. But what do i know, Im a newbie.

Wake up man adding horsepower and torque isnt as easy as you would like it to be. You dont just bolt on somthing and get crazy power right out of the box without some tweaking and research.

The other thing people are realizing here is, everyone's doing all these air flow modifications but nothing to the fuel system?!?

Basically your making your motor run so lean its killing itself.

Sure you get a little bit more power but you dont really start to get some real power until you modify the ECU/Fuel System.

When you add AIR you MUST ADD FUEL!
