Well my dad after picking up the car wanted to drive it... Well it was low on gas so he said he was going to fill it up for me. Well today when I asked him, "You filled up with premium right?" he replied "Uhh no, why would a honda need premium?" Could putting regular mess anything up? I hope not

you should know better than that. our cars take nothing less than the best pleaase put 93 only, if not you are going to damage the engine!!!!!!!!!
Not too sure that it will DAMAGE the engine. May not be best in the long run, like others said, but one tank isn't like giving it a tank of sugar. Besides, I thought it was 91 that the owner's manual suggests.

DUDE, are you serious? you better hope your fuel filter holds up, you might have damaged ur injectors. each of those cost 150.

is my area the only place that goes 87, 89, 93? WTF happened to 91?
Both of my Legacies have asked for 91. NEVER SEEN IT. The '96 was less forgiving. It had to have 89 or it would blow O2 sensors. The '99 does fine with '87. Thank God.

I am not sure where these doom and gloom comments come from, but your car has a knock sensor built into is that detunes the car slightly so that it will run just fine on regular gas. As far as I know, all newer cars have some version of a knock sensor to allow for the use of lower grade fuel.

To address some of the comments from outer space:

you will not damage your injectors and do you really think your fuel filter knows the difference between 91 and 89 octane? :giggle: It filters the fuel, not checks the octane!

it shouldn't run any rougher if the anti-knock sensor is working properly

you aren't going to damage the engine by having the knock sensor reduce the timing!

if you don't calculate your fuel mileage (miles driven by gallons uses) then you probably won't notice the percent or two less mpg, if there is even any!

As others have stated, your car will run fine all day long on regular gas with a slight drop in performance as I commented on. Some, including me, only use 89 octane gas and the car doesn't car nor do I notice any loss of performance. Of course, I am old enough that the "need for speed" just isn't as strong anymore. :)

Gary, most of us are being smart-asses. This question comes up...every day. It's beaten to death.

But I'm telling y'all, Morton Thiokol couldn't make O-Rings, but damn that solid rocket fuel is good stuff.

And then people came back to earth and realized their claims of lost power/gas mileage were absurd.

You won't los gas mileage.
You won't lose power.
You won't ruin anything.

This is not a rocket car.

EDIT: This post was edited because I re-read it and realized that I used "was" where it ought to have been "were"....forgive me.

Oh, well, then "never mind". That is a problem with email and forum posts. You can't hear the tone or see the face of the person.

Fwiw, on the Lexus forum, this comes up regularly and some of these same comments come from people who SEEM intelligent. My wife's Lexus RX-330 says it will take regular gas but if you WANT (not that it doesn't say need) optimum performance then you should use premium fuel.

I use solid rocket fuel from NASA that we heisted from Morton Thiokol in Utah...Good stuff.
LMAO!

My dad works at Morton Thiokol in Promontory, UT! Don't ask me exactly what he does -- something in an engineering/lab department related to the Space Shuttle. The company's actually called ATK now.

But yeah, I guess if we wanted to experiment with some high-test fuel, I've got the insider connection over there!

We've been running regular in our RX300 for 7 years and its been fine. Most cars that have some decent power reccomend something better than 87. The salesman we bought our 330XI said it will run fine on 89, just a slight power loss. Darn, only 250 hp instead of 255.

Our legend can take the "standard unleaded" gas (87 or something)!
I used such gas for roughly 100k miles on my previous 94L sedan, no problem whatsoever due to gas grade. I donated it when it reached 200k roughly. I donated it because it was still running good!

I am using whatever regular one (cheapest) in any gas station for my current 95LS coupe! Not at all any problem! So anyone saying damaging engine etc per low grade fuel.... ... I am not so sure....

However, there is certainly beneft using premium, that is,

Smoother engine running
and for sensitive emission system for some other cars (may shorten the life of o2 sensor etc for some other cars if keep using lower grade.. but not our legend....)

that's it! Period!
