Ok, so I have been helping phil with his car. He hydrolocked it, 2.5 years ago, rods through the block, standard stuff. You probably all know this. I live over an hour from his old house, and I am a fairly busy person, so taking the time to do a motor swap is not exactly easy. It sat for a year, then we got the motor out etc. We now have a type II in, and are finishing up the swap. It will be a type II 5 speed, yadda yadda. In the process it has gotten, type II brakes up front, new inner tie rods, and a bunch of other stuff. It also had the old block dropped on the fender (and phils hand) in the process.
Phil has since moved to college ( a few weeks ago) and has brought the peice of shit down here and we are finishing it.
Apparently when we put the motor in we pinched one of the hoses on the back of the block between the firewall and the block. It cut it, and coolant was leaking when we put it in. We yanked the diff out and found the line, and now it is repaired. The car goes back together and will hopefully be started within the week. Let me rephrase that. I want the fucker out of my garage as fast as i can get it out. Im not as nice as his mom, if its not out in 2 weeks im going to get it towed out.........
Anyway. In case anyone wants to know, i think legends have a distinctive smell. I know they all sound the same when they start, and that is very distinctive, we noticed that at the national meet. No matter how many mods, they all sound the same when they start. I think the fact that there are so many coolant lines running everywhere gives it the smell. No matter if you drain the entire cooling system, you are still going to pop off hoses and get coolant run everywhere. Its just how it goes. Other cars dont seem to do this. Thus i think legends smell of honda coolant (distinctive in and of itself) a bit of grease/oil, and the standard metalic smell. I have worked on quite a few cars, and i can always tell when there is a legend on jackstands in my garage.
And, for further review. Here are some pics of the diff.
Where it came out of:
Transmission side.
and here is what is going up for sale from my sedan this week.
And one more thing. I really dont think we needed to pull the diff to fix the problem, but phil is an idiot, and it was difficult to locate the problem with a slow leak dripping from the bottom of the diff. Oh, and from what i can tell, you dont need to drop the rack to get the diff out (we didnt) and, hmmmm, i think thats it. Any questions, comments, or complaints.
