im not at all, the only way to get it to shift smooth is to let off the gas the moment b4 it shifts into second.

I've been able to get smoother shifts from 1st to 2nd by accelerating really gradually and, like above, letting off the gas a bit right before it shifts. The auto trans is known for this abrupt shift, so everything should be fine. If you really want to ease up on it then take off alot slower.

However, I'd rather just accelerate normal, or even quicker, and enjoy that lil squeak I get from the tires when it goes into second. It's a nice reminder of how much I love the engine in these things.

so....has anyone else had this problem and found a cure?????????????
The abrupt shift itself is how the trans shifts as designed. I'm sure it's unnerving for some at first, but just to be clear, it isn't a mechanical problem unless you're getting grinding sounds, leaks or other signs of something major going wrong.

However, really good trans mounts will lessen how much you feel the hard shift, or eliminate you noticing it altogether. Yours were replaced four years ago, so maybe you should have them looked at again, just in case.

Check out THIS thread on the forum for some good information on this topic.

Good luck!

You're welcome.

My trans doesn't jerk from 1st to 2nd all that badly, unless I'm accellerating really quickly, which is most of the time ::haha:: Maybe I'm used to the car by now, but I don't ever remember doing anything more than thinking to myself, "There's that 1st to 2nd shift jump I've heard about."

Mine has never been so bad that it bothered me and I'm usually picky about stuff like that. If it ever got worse, I'd check into it.

So far, my trans is original. I checked through all the service records and don't see anything stating the mounts have been replaced, so those should be original, too.

It's hard to tell without being in the car what another person considers "too abrupt" a shift. I think the important thing is that you found it bothersome enough to post a thread, it's your car and like BK you should have it "your way," so you should definitely consider all the options available to reducing it as much as possible. :)

hey, maybe some one with an auto typeII can take me for a ride... :patriot:
If you lived near me I would take you for a ride. As you know I have a Type I auto and the thing scratches when I take off in 1st and during the shift from 1st to 2nd! :)

I was looking at An 93 Auto LS, but first gear was going into 2nd pretty hard, so i didnt buy it, maybe i should lay off the gas pedal

1-2 Shift

Hi All,
I am new here too, and I will post some pictures after the paint job. I have 1994 LS Auto. I do also experience 1 - 2 hard shift too. I will talk to my mechanic next week, and let you know.
