This is my first post on this board. My 11-year old Legend sedan has about 34,000 miles on it (I don't drive it much) but recently it has started to sound really really rough. I recently had an oil/filter change done on it, so I'm guessing it's not related to that. Could it be the spark plugs need changing?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks. I guess I'll bring it in to have it looked at anyway. I hope it really is just something as simple as needing new spark plugs. The car's never given me any problems before.

Er....sorry if I sound dense, but why should I do the 50K or 60K maintenance when it's no where near that mileage?

I'll take some pictures after I give her a good washing tomorrow. The car's all original, even down to the original tires. Somebody (whose name shall not be mentioned) actually curbed the front right wheel just last week (the first real imperfection to appear on the car) and I'm a little pissed about it. Otherwise, it is pretty mint. I've thought about getting aftermarket wheels for the car countless times, but I kinda like it OEM. Oh well...

Supposed to change belts and hoses after six years, I believe, not just 90k mi. Belts and hoses crack and expand over time. Changed all my belts, hoses, put in new radiator, water pump, etc. on one of my G2 Legends that still has only about 20k mi on it. The other G2, did the same at 40k mi for the same reason. On my G1 coupe did the same every 40k mi. You can laugh at me for the compulsiveness on the cars, but I have not had any bad problems to date. My old Supra was sold to someone else and has over 300k mi with no engine or cooling problems. Legends have very fragile cooling systems, so to me, the less miles and the more valuable your car is, the better to take care of it.

Oh, very interesting. So does your G2 still run smooth? I made an appointment this morning to bring the Legend in to the dealership later this week. Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

I got a 92 Legend in 2005 with 87k on it, and it was the same situation - had to maintain the car based on time, not mileage. Got oil changes every 4 months, and timing belt every 5 years. I'm sure the stuff came out looking pretty clean, but as people have posted above, time does do some damage to parts, even if they're not driven.

Strangest thing today, however....I started her up just for the sake of it, and it doesn't sound as rough as it did last week. It's a lot warmer today than it was last week. Could the temperature be a factor in any way?

Yes, but you are still well-advised to change all the stuff I mentioned to you earlier, and the plugs and O-rings as well. I also would bet that the plugs have nasty sludge on them after 12 years. I plan to flush out the entire motor and put in an extrude-honed port and polished Type 2 manifold when I change my gaskets. Many of us here are also superstitious and stick to Honda coolant only, because it doesn't have a lot of the gasket-hardening silicates in it. Use the search button at the top for "Honda coolant" and you will find the arguments there for Honda OEM coolant. And yes, it does run like new, but that one is the least driven, only for recreation and to keep it from getting stagnated(motor, AC, battery.)
