I have an '87 Legend sedan V6, and the thing sounds like a diesel. I bought it used about two years ago from an owner who didn't take real good care of it. I believe the noise is the lifters sticking due to the motor being run low on oil for an extended period of time. The rate of the noise increases with the RPM. Is the noise lifters, and is there a way to get rid of this noise?

don't expect too much on the first oil change

It takes a few oil changes to really loosen all the crap up in there, so dont be surprised if it's still a little noisy t begin with.
also ATF in place of flush products does a bang up job before you drain the old oil.
I use 5w30 semisynthetic, atf for flush and a lifter freeing additive afterwards and my diesel engine only rears it's ugly head every 506 thousand K's,

good luck with yours!
