no such thing as just a recharge, refrigerant doesn't just disappare. you have a leak someplace, or another issue.

you should check to see if there is ANY refrigerant in the system, unscrew either of the port covers, and using ur key, lightly press the valve open, for a split second, either you'll hear pressure releasing or you wont. DON"T DO IT FOR TOO LONG IF THERE IS PRESSURE, once u start hearin it stop.

Next step would be to have it leak tested, if there is none, which there probably wont be.
 
if your system is STOCK, no updates, it is an R12 system. dont mix the 134a into it..a manifold guage set measures the high/low system pressures. Used for charging and diagnostics. will assist where I can...check craigslist in your area for freon r12. its pricey as it is "forbidden" these days.
The only thing "forbidden" about it is, the release into the atmosphere
