The most notable of those were Volkswagens and Porsches. Both of the VWs had shifters that you PUSH IN to get to reverse and I think the Porsche had reverse somewhere off to the left.

:werd: i drove one of my uncles early 90-something Golf one day, and the pattern on the shift knob was completely gone..and i couldnt find reverse to save my damn life . Eventually, i found it, and it was like all the way to the left, push in, and down or somethin odd as hell like that lol.
