guys, need help badly. I took my 89 legend ls v6 to the dealer to have it checked out and this is what they say it needs. fyi, the car has 127,000 miles on it also, this is parts and installation

1. Timing Belt and water pump - $840
2. Distributor O-Ring - $185
3. Ball Joints - $460
4. Both Front outer axels - $600
5. Valve Cover Gaskets (top and side) $409

total is about $2500. I was hoping it would cost more like $1000 but damn, am i getting ripped off? They said its mostl for labor. i didn't pay that much for the car, is this worth it?

Timing Belt and water pump should be about half that, Dealer installed.
Distributor O-ring is $1.25 part, one bolt and 10 minutes max. I'm guessing a Dealer would charge $50-60, unless your talking about replacing the entire distributor (I got a used one for $15 on eBay, but the Dealer quoted me $350 for part).
Axles should be $200-250 each installed, at a Dealer.

...don't know about the others, 'cept the valve cover and side cover gasket set from a posted online source costs about $110.

BTW, these are Dealer costs I paid on mine. Other shops would/should be less and doing any of them yourself would save a lot.

Dealer costs for timing belt is actually about $722 retail. I am having mine done right now for $650 because I bought the car from them. This includes the timing belt, accessory belts, crank and cam seals, valve cover gaskets, tensioner, water pump, coolant flush, and a full wash/vacuum.

I will always take my Legend to the dealer from now on. I think $650 is a reasonable price and if anything goes wrong with the repair, there will be no hassles dealing with some a-hole independent. I got quoted a little over $1200 at an independent that specialized in Hondas/Acuras for the timing belt (with all the same things as the dealer would give, but actually minus a few).

Thas alot of cheese.

Timing belt and water pump was $275.00 for labor
Valve cover gaskets I did myself
Axles replacement was $80.00 each side and about $75.00 for each axle.
Lower Ball joints like $200.00 for labor, parts $40.00 each online.

O-ring haven't done that yet.

I get most of my work done at an independent mechanic and they're pretty cool. For a car that's 15-16 years old I wouldn't spend the money. Unless it's something really crucial.

My 2 cents get a Helms manual and save some money.

i went to r&s strauss

guys, i couldn't wait much longer cause its hard for me to take time off from work, even on the weekends, so i just took it to r&s strauss. everything i listed above that acura was charging me $2500 for R&S Strauss is doing for $1400 plus tax. i saved over a grand. here's a break down for anyone interested

timing belt, water pump and heating and cooling service - $462

both front axels plus alignment - $408

side cover and top cover valve gasket plus oil change - $235
I think i may have been taken on this one

and last

Lower ball joints, both sides $343

thanks to everyone that gave advice.

It's $700 at an Acura dealer. If you people are getting quotes for 4 to 5 hundred...buyer beware. Certified mechanics/Acura charge $700 for the job. Maybe they will charge lower, but you'll get a mechanic that dosen't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

The same dealer that quoted me $350 for a distributor (part only) did my water pump and timing belt, including tensioner, coolant flush and fill and hoses for less than $400, but that was over 5 years ago.

I don't have a problem with inflation, but 20% per year would be excessive, IMO.

i think i paid about $500 for parts and labor. i ordered the parts from A&H Motors, belt, pump, cam seals, and tensioner. i took my car to New Way Autos, theyre an import shop. the owner buys japanese cars and hooks them up. hes very experienced with jap cars, and he did great work on my car, i trust him better than the dealer, plus he only charges $40/hr labor. he told me as long as i got honda parts and the tensioner especially, after he installed everything i would never have to come back. and i havent, that was a bold statement but he knows hes good. with the valve cover gaskets i would do them yourself, its very easy. i cant believe they charge $400 for that. the gaskets are only about $40 total. and $185 for a distributor o ring is a rip. like stated earlier its probably only a buck or two for the o ring and takes less than 10 min to install. just go to a cv specialists for axles. they put rebuilt ones in there and offer a 1yr warranty for about $90 a side. theyre just axles i dont see the point in putting new ones in especially from acura. but if i was doin this job i would leave the cv joints and ball joints and water pump and belt up to a mechanic. everything else i would do myself

I think your best bet is to get to know a mechanic. Then ask them to do it off of work. THey charge less. That's what I do anyway. I know three different mechnics who'll do the work for like $35 an hour. I buy the parts, they do the labor. I love our relationship.
