I just recently changed out my VSS. It costed my 80 bucks at acura of agusta and another 20 to get it changed.

to those that think that the VSS doesn't affect anything els other than the speedometer, well then YOUR WRONG. It does affect the transmission shifting more or less so don't hold out too long to change the VSS.

When my VSS was bad, my car was shifting strangely upon take off. This was more noticable the longer I left the faulty VSS still installed in my car, the longer I left the faulty VSS in my car, the worse the speedometer got and the worse my transmission felt.

Now that it's swapped, no more crazy speedometer and no more strange tranny shifting upon take off.

just an FYI

yes, that's why when your VSS go bad, the D4 shifter light blinks. Because the shifter lights gives code for malfunctioning in the tranny.

what are the symptoms of a bad vss? im getting very rough shifting from 1st to 2nd and so on. and i cant tell if D4 is flashing 'cause the light burnt out =\

Your speedo will jump up and down randomly, working intermittently.

These cars have a hard shift from 1-2nd gear. I heard that from someone on the forums, and I tend to agree. Even with a transmission fluid change 1-2 are still a little rough-but I guess its the car not a sign of malfunction.

Ok, now it's my turn. Yesterday I was going to the airport to pick up my buddy and suddenly my speedo needle just dropped to 0 and then went up and then back to 0. Then D4 started flashing.

I haven't had this problem today yet but it looks like i'll have to buy an new part and do a DIY install.

Couple of questions on my part:
1. Can I damage the car by driving with faulty/not working VSS?
2. What is the nature of a VSS failure? Is it electrical? mechanical? Can it be fixed without buying a new part? I know it might sound stupid because I haven't even seen the VSS part.

Thanks

VSS is a electrical sensor that senses the speed of the wheels. The only thing I can think of that could be damaged would be your transimission in the long long run, since the tranny computer uses the VSS readings to determine shift points, if VSS is sending wrong readings, that could cause erratic shifting.

I think you can buy a VSS repair kit that's a little cheaper, I've seen it for sale before.

Wow this is funny. When I was looking at Legends I found the perfect one. 93 Burgandy coupe, black leather, tinted windows GS even I believe, but the stupid D4 light kept blinking. After the test drive I told them that the VSS was bad, and if they fixed it I would pay cash for the car. I went back the next day and he said it had been F uck ed up son long that it had indeed fux0red the tranny as well. It was gonna cost $4k+ for repairs, so they scrapped it. So yeah, it definately CAN and WILL kill a tranny if you let it go.

An early symptom is that your cruise will suddenly cut out and a rapid loss of gauge RPM. This can occur without triggering the D4.

Lets remember that a blinking D4 doesn't just mean the VSS is going bad, the tranny could be on the fritz as well.
The D4 is a tranny code, but it's the tranny telling you something is wrong because the VSS is messed up.

ok i read everything on this post, unfortunatly my D4 light doesnt work so i wouldnt know if the tranny or my VSS is bad.

but today i left anahiem and the place was flooded... i hit a couple of water planes and all this water just kept slapshing out from my wheel well. i did my best not to drive in those areas but at times i would have to drive through those areas.. what started to scared me was once i drove over those big puddles, my speedometer went from 40mph to 0. then it would go back to 40 then hop to 50 then back to 0. and when i come to a complete stop and start accelerating again, the speedometer stayed at 0. it did that for about 5 minutes. when i drove over large puddles again it would go back to normal. it stayed normal until i got home.

can someone please help me out, this is the first time me seeing my baby do this. did the speedometer act the way it did because of the rain? or is my VSS going bad.

in advance, thank you

right.

I was just stating that there are "other" things that could go wrong in order to set off the D4. But it usually doesn't happen though. (knock on wood)

The symptoms are becoming worse. I get the crazy speedo 2-3 times a day now.
I managed to take the entire VSS part out today to take a look at it. The mechanical aspect of it looks fine. All the electrical connectors are kinda old. I cleaned them and I'll give it a try for a few more days. If the problem presists, I'm gonna install new VSS electrical module that is on top of the VSS.
