ok i read everything on this post, unfortunatly my D4 light doesnt work so i wouldnt know if the tranny or my VSS is bad.

but today i left anahiem and the place was flooded... i hit a couple of water planes and all this water just kept slapshing out from my wheel well. i did my best not to drive in those areas but at times i would have to drive through those areas.. what started to scared me was once i drove over those big puddles, my speedometer went from 40mph to 0. then it would go back to 40 then hop to 50 then back to 0. and when i come to a complete stop and start accelerating again, the speedometer stayed at 0. it did that for about 5 minutes. when i drove over large puddles again it would go back to normal. it stayed normal until i got home.

can someone please help me out, this is the first time me seeing my baby do this. did the speedometer act the way it did because of the rain? or is my VSS going bad.

in advance, thank you
sounds like you VSS. Is your d4 light blinking?

I don't know if it has anything to do with the puddles, I doubt it.

Well. My VSS is acting up too but one day I went through a rather deep lake :D and the speedo started acting fine for at least a week with no prob. So could a simple cleaning of the connectors do the trick?

I suspect exactly the same thing! I took the VSS out cleaned connectors and put it back. So far the problem hasn't been back :)

So VSS problem is back. I got VSS kit from Acura of Augusta for $80 and I'll be installing it this week.
2 questions:

1. The kit comes with a rubber ring for the mechanical part of the VSS assembly. Do i have to change that ring if I pulled out the entire VSS thing?

2. Is the VSS plugged directly into the differential? I can't tell whether the lubricant is differential oil or something else.

Thanks!

Hello,

I am a new forum member. My wife has a '92 Legend L sedan (53K), purchased last year. We are getting the speedometer needle bounce and flashing shift indicator lite problem. I haven't noticed any transmission shift problems. Can anyone give me directions to the vss itself, parts I need to remove to find it, and some idea of what to look for? I looked thru my Chilton's but didn't see any mention of the vss. Acura of Augusta told me it's on the transmission-that's all I know.

Thanks,

Dave

VSS location

You need access to the underside of your car.

You need to remove the Plastic under guard that protects the underside of the engine from dirt.

Once you have this off you can get a good look at it.

It's near the differential -has a black wire comming out of it - the wire connects to a connector about 6 inches from the unit.

The Helms manual (used by techs) shows it very well - the Chilton and Haynes don't.

Replacement takes 1 hour. ( most time is spent getting the car in the air and taking the guard off).

Be aware - you will need a TOrx tamper proof T20 driver bit. You can buy from Proto etc ( regular Torx T20 with nipple in end).

Some people remove the whole unit and replace the "bad" part at their work bench.

I didn't - did it on the car - you just need a little manual dexterity.

Be aware - you need to replace this $80 part ! - you may not notice wierd shifting now but you run the risk of trashing your transmission = $$$$$$$$$

Nice Saturday afternoon project.

Have Fun.

Limey.

If memory serves, the VSS is located in proximity to the oil filter. You can't miss it. I had trouble with the top phillips screw holding the "gut" (pick-up) to the VSS body, so just removed the unit. Had to use a brass drift to gently tap the unit a 1/4 turn LT, then RT a few times before I could pull it out of the diff. In doing this, you will seep a bit of diff fluid. You also need two dowels or something to block the two hoses which you will disconnect from the VSS. You will leak transmission fluid.
With the VSS off the diff, the repair takes about 5 min.

You need to use every part which comes with the kit. Especially the new gasket.

oh so those hoses are filled with tranny fluid? i thought they have powersteering fluid in them.
do i also need to replace the rubbor O ring on the part that goes into the diff?

If you remove the VSS body from the diff you are supposed to replace the O-ring which comes with the kit. If you don't remove the VSS body, you don't use the new O-ring. The new VSS is packaged with an illustration sheet which will show you how things go back together. This repair is a "no-brainer".

yeah, looks easy, but their description is terrible! how do i get the rubber ring on and off? do i just stretch it and pull it off the end?

To all who responded to my post, thanks a lot!
To Shahavchik, I'll be looking for the pictures when you have them. I also think I'll take a look at the offending part on the car, and decide what to do from there.

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, very carefully.

I've been having problems with my speedometer but not sure if it is becasue of the VSS.

The speedometer works fine up to about 50mph. From there it gets progressivly "off", like this:

reading actual
55 57
60 63-64
65 59
70 63
75 67
80 68-69
over 80 it gets really off.... I tested the reading vs. actual by having people pace me and also testing at a 1 mile test section of straight highway near my town.

Also I've only noticed this once or twice but the speedo will jump up or down by 10 degrees and then return while driving. Could the incorrect speed reading be from the VSS or do I possibly have comething else going on?
