in hawaii its totally different... they get really mad with you tint the back window because they high beam your ass when they pull you over so they can see what youre doing inside the car... if you have the back window tinted dark they dont know if your getting a shot gun ready for them.
See, that actually makes sense. Generally the police's concern with tint is that it obstructs their view into your car when they've got you pulled over. It's for their own protection. They could give two shits about safety concerns or whatever else. The police in Bethlehem, PA are infamous for checking your tint with some special device and making you scrape it off on the spot if it blocks any more than 13% of sunlight. Therefore, I don't fuck with tint.

Well the rear windows can be tinted or even painted black, but the front windows need to be clear. The cops are just asshole and have nothing to do. They won't throw you in prison for having weed (depends on the baggie lol) If its a roach, they'll just throw it on the floor and step on it.
Actually to clarify, it used to be that way. Here are the current regs. enacted as of January 1, 1999

HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN CALIFORNIA?

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In California, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows: Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Back Side Windows: Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window: Any darkness can be used.

HOW REFLECTIVE CAN THE TINT BE IN CALIFORNIA?

Similar to sunglass lenses, some tinting film contain metallic elements that help in reflecting incoming light and reducing the glare and heat generated by visible light.
Front Side Windows: Must not be more reflective than a standard window.
Back Side Windows: Must not be more reflective than a standard window.

OTHER CALIFORNIA RULES AND REGULATIONS

Restricted Colors: The tint color(s) of RED AMBER BLUE are not legal by state law.
Side Mirrors: Dual side mirrors are required if back window is tinted.
Certificate Requirements: Manufacturers of film do NOT need to certify the film they sell in the state.
Sticker Requirements: No sticker to identify legal tinting is required.
Medical Exemption: State law does NOT allow medical exemptions that would allow you use special tint.*

* there are specific provisions for use of temporary shade devices which cannot be used after dusk (night time)

Hey Dannyboy, don't be an ass and drive drunk, how would you feel if some drunk driver kills someone in your family, say your mom, dad, etc. may be even a baby sibling.

mmm....citations. i got bunch o' tickets back in the day. no more for me, i've had my share. but really though, i dont know the exact percentage but my girl got 20 in the front and 15 in the back with no problems. i dunno how she does it, maybe cuz she's cute...idk. but basically they dont want dark ass tint in the back cuz they cant see you when they have they spotlights pointed in your cabin, and your front windows cant be tinted cuz they think you might be pointing a shot gun at them, or getting a shot gun to point at them:dunno:

man that was too much for me to read just now so I...didnt :)

I got pulled in AZ for my fronts being too dark (and that's all, no other violations at all) and received a fix-it ticket for just my front windows. I've heard that local cops cant pull you for that but highway patrol can. I would have thought that no moving violations means they cant pull me over (like seat belts back in the day)

You guys must live in police states: or else you are in the wrong places at the wrong time. In Florida, the Sunshine State, I've never heard of an illigal tint ticket or pull over.:dunno:
