I was just wondering what you have to do to get it started again other than adding more gas. Is it hard to get restarted? Does the fuel injection system have to have the air bled out of it. I know this is not the kind of thing people brag about, I just want to be prepared if it happens to me.

I have come very very very close to running out of gas a couple of times, but never completely to where I could not move the car anymore.

The first time I was at a stop light and the car began to sputter like it wanted to stall, but i simply put it in neutral and went to nearest gas station and filled up.

The second time I was getting off the highway on an off ramp that was kind of uphill, and the car just almost didn't make it up the hill, it would almost stall, but at the last second, find enough to push itself a bit more, and eventually made it up the hill and went to a nearby gas station.

I don't know what you should do tho if you run out completely...I always thought you simply need to fill up gas and start it up.

Do not make it a habbit running out of gas. I understand that if your fuel injector goes dry and has no gas passing through it you could possibly damage the injector. I here it is $200 for the fule injector plu labor, so dont run out of gas.

oh yeah, i don't make it a habbit to do that...those were just a couple of times i had been trying to run it as much as possible to see what kind of gas mileage i was getting. :)

Is this something I want to admit to? Hehehe... I ran out of gas on R78 when I first got my Legend. Sat on the side of the road for about 30 minutes before I managed to get about 2 gallons of regular gas into the car. Then headed to a gas station. I had no reprocutions and it started up after cranking on a few times after adding more fuel.

Never in my car...but in my Loaner RSX :D :D !! It was pretty funny...I felt the car stuttering like it wanted to stall right down the street from my house and then when it was parked in the driveway it DIED!! So when I tried to restart it...nothing! Put a little bit of old lawn mower gas in her and she started right up ;) !!

I read once, and it makes sense, that if you run your car low on gas, the "sludge" from the bottom of the tank will get sucked up and may clog your; i) fuel filter, ii) injectors, iii) fuel lines and iv) spark plugs.

Just don't all the way to E and you'll be ok. :D

First, I have never run out of gasoline. Doing so would be akin to deactivating the fuel pump when you replace the fuel filter. The only possible problem is that mentioned by Spiff. It might be beneficial to pour a couple bottles of dry gas into the fuel tank periodically. The tank holds 18 gallons. The last time my gauge was nearing the empty mark (but no low fuel warning activated), the refill was just over 15 gallons.

That's about it really. The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel moving through it. But even this case is unlikely.

I've run out twice in the Legend, and countless times in my S-10 when I was poor in high-school. You just crank it until it starts. No worries. In fact when I had my fuel rails removed recently to drill and tap my NOS pressure switch, it took about 5 seconds of cranking before it fired up.

A buddy of mine ran out in his crappy ass Corolla so we walked to the gas station and grabbed a little half-gallon tank to refill it. But it wasn't enough to reach the fuel pick-in the tank because of the angle it was parked. We had to roll it across the street to level ground before it would start. Just a thought.

I have read comments that cars with the fuel pump in the gas tank use the gas to keep the fuel pump from overheating. It was suggested that allowing the car to repeatedly run low on gas could cause premature fuel pump failure.
It seems reasonable to me, so I follow the recommendation, and fillup when my tank reaches the 1/4 mark. WHM

Besides the Low Fuel Indicator which is OEM, I have an "accessory" which never fails to monitor the fuel. The name is "Dear".

Once upon a time.....

Just once on I 95. no prob starting it up after pitting in a gallon

Ive heard tho that u shouldnt let the gas gauge go below a quarter tank. Probably coz (like someone already stated) what if u park on an incline.

Thanks for all the posts. It's safe to say that if I ever do run out it will be a simple gas and go to the closest pump. Some vehicles are very difficult to get restarted after running out.
I normally fill up at about 1/8 of a tank but I drive so many miles that I end up filling up about every 4 days. Also I live about 18 miles from where I buy gas so if I pass it up on the way home it's a 36 mile trip to get back to the station. I discovered that if I filled up after driving 350 miles(low fuel light on solid, needle on empty) I could only get 15 gallons back in the tank. Since it has an eighteen gal. tank I should have 3 more gallons left. So last week I went 378 miles before filling up and was only able to get 15.8 gallons in. I don't want to go below 1 gal of fuel in the tank. Next week I'm going to try to get 400 miles on a tank and see how many gallons I can pump in. I am just trying to lessen my stops at the gas pump, what a waste of time.
Is it odd that when the needle is on empty(light comes on) there is still 3 gallons of gas in the tank? I guess Acura is just trying to keep us from running out.
