i have a 90 with an auto tranny. it has a lot of troubles shifting into drive or reverse or any gear for that matter. when i go to make a three point turn i shift it into reverse and the light doesnt come on and my car wont go backwards. the same thing but in reverse for drive or any other gears. my car also sometimes wont shift into park and i cant take the key out because its not in park. the key lock keeps my key in. what the hell is going on. is this just a sign of a going trans or can i fix it.

I always tell people to check the shift indicator contact points in the console, by the shifter. It's a bunch of copper strips with slider contacts of same. A spilled Coke or such can cause havoc, besides just 15 years of corrosion in general.

If the signal never gets out, the ECU doesn't know what gear it's in.

Do the indicator lights work, both on the console and the instrument cluster? Do they match?
