Hello everyone, I have a quick question and I am hoping for a lot of input. I am sure this has been asked before but I want fresh perspective. I am going to look at an 88 legend this evening wiht an auto trans, it has 177k mile but the price is right (1500bucks) I have no Idea how much maintenance has been done to it if any at all. What I was wondering is what is the servise life of a well mantaine auto? How difficult are they to rebuild. Give me some stories good and bad about the automatic. I am an ASE master tech and remember even the honda techs being afraid of the autos in 88, I am a gm tech but also a trans tech so before I jump in I would like some opinions. Thanks

Well the autos in the G1 Legend, as Im sure you will hear if you havent already, are the weakest link in this model. Well maintained ones will last, but they all eventually start to slip and will need rebuilds...just make sure that Honda ATF is used and not Dexron....or consider a 5-speed swap.......good luck and welcome to the forums....

if this car was well maintained you have a very good chance of getting a desent auto tranny but if it was poorly maintained you don't stand a snow ball of a chance in hell.when these G1 legends get high mileage and not well maintained they start breaking down left and right and they are NOT cheap to repair.

I've owned 2 auto's, both 88's
88 is much better than 87 as the auto was revised for 88 (solenoids on the Outside where they can be serviced) It is probably the first big repair that will come up but I think you can expect to get another 30-50k out of it before you have any issues. The auto can be mean when it is cold, you gotta let the car warm up for a few minutes when it is cool out, about 7mins when cold (in canada i mean damn cold) otherwise shifting is not as good at first. Honda z1 atf is definetly the best, i have tried 4 fluids in all (Z1, dextron2,3,multivehicle synth). Tranny drives really good, shifts are great. Tranny is setup really well with throttle position, sometimes i think my auto reads my mind not my foot. S gear is a very nice option which i almost never use.

i think the reason the g1's tranny fails is because they don't come with a trans filter.....for some reason mines did.

and i think they last longer if you do use the honda fluid.

the S mode feature comes in handy...and for some reason i get better mpgs than i do in D mode.

I have no idea how thats possible, i may have to test it out
doesn't Smode disable the lock up torque converter?

I know my mileage is lost when I am speeding on the highway with a full load
300km@avg125km/h - 30mpg
300km@avg150km/h - 21mpg
no mods - totally stock
this was with 4 people in the car, about 500lb total on the infamous coquihala

G1 auto trannies can be problematic as others have mentioned, although with regular maintenance, it can go a long ways... shifts a wee bit rough at times but honda ATF will keep it smooth.

You'll also find S3 and S4 really fun to use...

hmmm.....
actully what i think happens is......
get this in S3 my t/c locks and S4.

but what i belive what happens is in D the t/c locks in 2nd,3rd,4th.
imo i feel it lags the car cause it shifts so quickly...i'm goig like 25-30mph and it's in 4th.

in the city if i look at my info center in D the mpgs go down.....right now i'm getting 17.3....
if in D it'll go down by .1's....
in S i could somewhat drive how i want and it does'nt make the fuel economy suffer.
and it also goen into the redline a bit...compared to drive.
