The tranny will last as long as you want it to. It would go 300+ if you drive conservatively and change your fluid with Honda ATF every 30k miles...

If you don't take care of it it you may get 100k out of it.

I've never had one rebuilt. I have heard of alot of tranny shops not touching Honda transmissions because of the way that they are built. If you need a new one get a JDM off ebay. They around 2 to 4 hundred dollars for a 30 - 60k mile unit...

heads up dont buy a used transmission unless you want to rebuild it.

i've gone through two so far, but that's because the first was on its way out when i bought he car, the second was a used transmission with unknown history like most transmissions/engines.

the first died pretty harsh with the original mileage at 242,xxx, the second one died slowly...but this is all because 1. i was a knot-head kid. 2. the transmissions were tired.and 3. faulty cooling system.

Now they will last 300-400k miles if you keep them maintaned and and change the fluid.

mine died from heat. I drove it hard, and the transmission cooler wasn't up to snuff, i believe it was clogged. killed the first and second transmissions. i've since installed a transmission cooler, and had the second transmission rebuilt. i've slowed down alot but i do still get on it every now and again, and it's still going strong.

if you drive vigourously, i figure you should get a secondary transmission cooler, or at the very least, get the cooler cleaned and change your fluid every 30k.

the cost for the transmission rebuild was $1500...

i caught the guy sleeping. he knew about G1s but didn't know about the G2s i kept askin him if he knew that 91 was a G2 second generation, he just was like yea yea...after all was said and done he told me he's going to charge anybody from there on out 2500. And you're right...most people will not even look twice at the Legend.

The 2 JDM trannys that I used have not given me any trouble. I installed one in my sedan and 1 in a customers car. The customer has not had any complaints and my sedan is doing just fine.

Most tranny guys were trained on the conventional auto tranny that uses 2 or more planetary gears sets with the usual clutch packs, drums, bands, sprags etc. Most tranny rebuilders wont even touch a honda tranny because it is a totally different design and (basically a manual tranny with clutch packs instead of syncronisers) there is the lack of aftermarket replacement parts. I was going to rebuild the one in my sedan and the parts alone were going to run over a grand (dealer parts). Also I haven't been able to find a teardown manual, which is highly recomended. I used that information to draw the conclusion of a used one. The used ones that I got come with a 6 month unlimited mile warranty, also between 40 - 60k miles for $400 shipped I couldn't complain.

on my transmissions they were tired and the clutches were worn. let alone if a transmission dies and if you get it replaced and dont have the cooler flushed you're basically going to be buying another trans...

atleast that's how it went down for me. cooler was ineffective because of the build up of clutch shards.carbon buildup, clutches glazed, it was crazy. all because the cooler wasn't done right.

but anyhoo. if you replace the transmission.

Man i think the guy who rebuilt mine flew by ear. it was completely different for him, and he was confused for a bit, but he felt really confident in the finished product. and he gave me a 1 year warranty with unlimited mileage (normally six months/6,000miles) he was extremely proud of himself

I'm pretty sure Level Ten sells the "rebuild" packages for the MPYA. and it's not 1000 dollars. infact i've seen a bunch of trans rebuild packages several years ago and one was a revised version of the one for the MPYA in the TL. *does a search on google*

Thats one brave dude right there. Well, at least I wouldn't attemp to rebuild one without it. :bowdown: He is an experienced rebuilder...

I searched and searched for an aftermarket kit and couldn't locate one. The dealer does not have one. They only sell the individual parts (ie $1000) well atleast my Acura dealer doesn't have a kit... It makes since, I should have used the internet other than parts suppliers

Yes it is a must to flush the tranny coolers when you replace or rebuild. We do alot of Jasper tranny replacements and we bought a really nice tranny cooler flush machine that uses paint thinner. It fluses through one way for a few minutes and then reverses the flow for a few more, then blows dry with air. Its pretty slick.

It sounds like you did good with that rebuild. I just couldn't pass up the prices of the JDM units, no way to go wrong w/ a 6 month warranty. If it were bad then I would notice it during this time. Good luck so far...
