Was driving home from work tonight and out of nowhere I saw the battery light on the dash light up and stay light for 20 secs or so, then the light went off...then it kind of flickered on & off.....did this stay on then go off then flicker on & off for about 5 mins...by the time I got home it was off...I got home, turned the engine off...wanted to see if she would start up...turned the key and it started right up...no battery light or anything...I checked the battery and everything is connected ok...maybe just need a new battery? Dunno how old this one is...

Was there any correlation between your RPMs and the battery light? (low RPM = battery light on)?

Did your ALB light come on as well?

Could be your alternator or battery, or a freak mistake haha. Autozone will check toe two former, free of charge.

Yeah, generally the ALB light comes on when the alternator is going out... and the illumination of both lights tends to correlate with low RPMs.

Sounds like the batt.
Make sure you get the right size! =]
Oh and Optima RedTop FTW.

Ophidian:

I could look at it with you in the next couple of days. You could come over to the shop in Woodinville or I could meet you at the hanger in Monroe at the airport. My knee-jerk reaction is bad brush contact. We can check all of that.

DrD, sorry but I was sick over my weekend (thurs/fri)...anyway, today on my way home the light came on again...but I was paying attention to the lil bugger...it will come on if I downshift from 5th to 4th (the rpm's go down to like 2k while shifting) the light comes on...flickers a couple times, go over a bump and it'll go away...if I shift back to 5th it goes away too...

mine was coming on randomly like that for about 2 or 3 weeks...then one night I was in the mcdonalds drive thru and the dreaded anti lock brake light flickered on and off a couple times while I was ordering...by the time I got the the second window to pick up my food both alb light and battery light were on, lady hands me the food, car died....drive thru became push thru followed by a 3 block walk to my house to enjoy cold mcdonalds fries...thinking back I probably should've just ate in the car and then walked home....

Dave, thx..It would have to be either thurs or fri as those are my days off...am sick now, flu...still going to work tho as all the inmates on the housing unit I am assigned to are sick already, so...who cares about them tho, lol... dunno where the airport is in monroe..only know the mcdonalds on fryland, the fairgrounds and the prison..oh and main street...

^that just makes too much sense. hehehehe

my own alternator is acting up too. the batt light comes on and all my lights (headlights, dash, clock) get real bright when the engine's warm and i rev over 3000. kragen alternators suck but i'm glad i got my warranty.

Last time I had this problem it was a faulty alternator... if neglected, it can swiftly take out your battery as well; even if it's new!

Update: Tonight, got home from work (20min drive), stopped at my mailbox to get the mail...car acts like it's going to die, but doesn't, rpms go real low, dash lights and headlights get dim, nearly all the way out...I step on the gas, no response...try again, rpms increase barely...get the mail, turn the car off (probably a mistake)...couldnt start it up right away...finally got it started w/dim dash and headlights, made it to my garage, but had to rev the engine to keep it from dying...alternator and/or battery? DrD, may have to meet ya sooner than planned, lol.

Was a bad alternator...bad brush contact due to a "groove" in the rotor... Replaced it w/a 135amp HO OEM alternator, all is good now.
:woot: ...yet another High Output OEM alternator installed, any noticeable difference? let us know, I might go this route meself ;)

No noticeable difference as of yet, but am planning on installin 2 12" subs and a power hungry Orion HCCA 2100 amp to power the 12"s....probably end up getting a dry cell and putting it in the trunk....no caps for me! Will let ya know...has only been in a day and didn't drive much today...

Sweet I'm glad you got the problem solved. I'm also curious about the high amp alternator since I got some serious bass that likes to make my lights dim a lot lol.

Here is the cause of Ophidians charging problem. This is a closeup of the back of the rotor on his alternator. The brush had worn down and had worn into the slipring big-time. This caused the intermittant charging he experienced. The diagnosis was to hook up a voltmeter to the battery and an amp meter to the output lead of the alternator. After these were hooked up a sharp smack on the alternator with a rubber hammer knocked the brush into contact with the slipring. It charged at 62 amps with a good contact.
