i was out driving tonite and i was curious to my 89 coupe's (auto) top speed is. so i took it to 130mph approx 5500rpm, and decieded that was it for one night, so while at 130mph i put it in neutral (N) to coast back to a slower speed. when i got back down to about 75-80mph i put it back in drive (D). right when i did that, i heard a very quiet scratching or chattering noise come from the engine bay that only lasted about a second. so i ran the car to about 100mph and then went into neutral again to coast back. when i got to 75mph or so i put it back in (D) and it still did it. i dont think anything got damaged cause everything ran fine on the way home and in the parking lot. it wasnt loud and scary but i heard it and im just curious to what it might be. im guessing something just engaging back into gear while the wheels are already spinning. i used to have a 87 coupe (manual) and i would throw it into gear while moving but never got that noise before. any suggestions??? thanks

i wouldn't know of exactly is going on in your tranny, but I've been warned many times of not putting an automatic transmission into neutral while the car is moving. This has something to do with smashing things together when putting it back into drive. I've also heard to ease the strain of manualy shifting gears in an auto transmission, you can "match rev" the tach to about the gear to your going to engage, but this would only work if you're down shifting from S4 to S3.

Anyway, you should probabally change your trans filter and flush it out to get any bits or junk that could have gotten into the fluid. Hope this helps.
